Why in the World...

Why in the World...

is this heading for the Neo and Pro?

Apples and Oranges - though both very tasty, are not the same.

(This relates to the reply I just posted under the Platinum heading. )

And, if you ever shop around, in general, for Handspring Visors, you'll see a great deal of confusion in addition to the fact that a lot of places just gave up (on Handspring) altogether.

A Crying Shame.

I would guess they are in the same heading because both came out about the same time and share characteristics and specs not shared by other products in the line. Not so much 'apples and oranges' as 'apples and pears'- closely related and very similar in many respects.

As for places giving up on Handspring, well, that is old news around here, unfortunately. The big question is who gave up on who? Retailers will carry stuff if it sells for them and is supported by the manufacturer or a jobber. People will buy what they think they need- seeking out brand names if it makes a difference to them.

Things in this field are shifting fast. PocketPC is closing the old size/cost/speed gap that used to exist between it and Palm. Cell phones seem to be confusing the market- many people think that their cell phone can do everything a PDA would do for them- and they may well be right.

I sorta wonder... what will things be like in 5 years? Personally, I see it as being a sort of a 'core device' that serves much like a Treo/Visorphone that can dock to a wide variety of other devices- a desktop dock turns it seamlessly into a fully networked computer, while plugging it into a dock in your car turns it into a screen/memory unit for your car's electronics- diagnostics, GPS, etc. Functionally, you would carry your hard drive with you, with a small screen and tiny keyboard to use on the run until you plug into something bigger.
