Question

Okay, there is the article on the front of VisorCentral saying that TRG is coming out with their own "PALM" clone. How did no one see this coming? Is there a "TRGCentral" site in the works?

What are people's thoughts on this? Will people buy from TRG just because they know how to insert memory into Palm?

Talking

Well, the word's been out for a few weeks now, you just had to look in the right places to find it.

If you want some serious details then go to PalmStation at this link and you'll find a thread from 9/24 that pretty much covers most of the details you would want to know about the device:
www.palmstation.com/view_article.py?article=996

Here's a small sampling to get your mouths watering:

1. TRG Pro to be based on the IIIx form and screen
2. CF type II card slot on the back-side of the Palm (read--allows memory cards up 320 MB including the IBM microdrive)
3. Lots of cool CF cards in the making (like wireless modems)
4. DTMF supported (may mean a much nicer spearker)

There's lots more but that should give you the gist of what's coming. But before everyone freaks out and says "WHAT AM I GOING TO DO NOW?!!" maybe you should ask yourself a few questions:

1. Do you need that much storage? Well, that depends on if you run around with huge databases and anticipate maxing out even the 8 MB available on two of the most recently released devices.

2. Could you use the added functionality that the CF cards will provide? Some folks will and most likely they'll be enterprise users, IT shops, and certain mobile salesforce or technicians.

3. Wait and see what it will cost. (You can always cancel your Visor and wait to see what happens in the handheld market). Personally I'm waiting because I'm not certain which device might best respond to my needs.

Finally, remember that the handheld market is still very immature and as such we're only now seeing real product specialization. The TRG Pro will be good for some folks, the Visor is better for others, and some will remain with Palm. All of this is GREAT for the Palm OS and for us users.

Cool

I myself am not looking to leave the Palm/Visor wagon yet. TRG may know memory but I'm not sure that they know Palm users that well and form factors.

I have yet to order a Visor (my P3 is fine for now). I'm waiting to get a little more feel for the acceptance of the Visor and it's Springboards.

I just find it funny that there is this huge concern/rush/love of the visor, when it sounds like TRG has basically got the same thing but using CF, which people have been asking for as a Springboard.

I'm not worried ... someone could always make a springboard that accepts CompactFlash modules. Actually I am surprised that no one has announced one yet.

Thumbs up

Eric:

I'd be surprised if there isn't CF card adapter SB in the making. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before this happens. It wouldn't be that difficult--relatively speaking--since Hawkins' springboard design allows the board to override the Palm OS.

I think the advantage of the Springboard of the CF is the Plug-n-Play features. I haven't seen the CF work as well as the Springboards are reported too.

Because it was Jeff Hawkins' vision that created the Palm, and so it is with the Visor. In my opinion the Visor will soon become a must have item; even bigger than the Palm ever was.
