which one? considering the cost diff being only $10. ??

is the backup module capable of the same inclusive backups that backup buddy can do? or does it just do hot sync style backups?

there're definitly advantages for the module. it's portable!

any opinions/experience welcome

get the module and also get the freeware programs like backup_all or backup bitser?

The module is great when you are not around your PC and the software is a nice backup for your backup

The module basically creates a snapshot of your internal RAM.

BackupBuddy (as far as I can tell from the demo) makes a duplicate of every PRC/database on the Visor/VDX in a directory (folder if non-Unix) on the host PC. I find this useful I I want to keep a backup of how it was--not just what worked last. I think you can rename the backup whatever it creates and then rename it back if you want to recover that profile.

The backup module (I think) creates a single backup that you can stash in a drawer in your office, for example, and as such, it's a more secure backup. If you just want to protect your handheld from hard-reset syndrome, Backup Buddy works. If you're afraid of tornadoes or something, get the module and leave it out-of-state.

If you ever plan to be away from your computer for a week or so (say, your employeer actually lets you take a vacation) the Module is essential.

But if you use the 8MB SBM

Obviously, the Backup SBM can not do anything for the 8MB SBM; and neither can any of the freeware backup programs (someone correct me if this is no longer true!). BackupBuddy can backup the 8MB SBM (but it can not track the contents of more than one 8MB SBM - although they may add this feature in the future), and it has some very intelligent options for speeding backups. For example, BackupBuddy can ignore AvantGo's data files and the data from apps with dedicated conduits (e.g. Addressbook, ToDo, Calendar and Mail - since they are syncing to the Palm Desktop or Outlook anyway). Furthermore, BackupBuddy will mirror you backup directories to Driveway.com or a network server.

BTW, I also own and use the Backup SBM. Very handy for those times when you are not near your desktop.
