Call me crazy, but when I want wireless Internet access through my PDA, I want it raw. I just saw the press release about the Go.Web service. Now, I don't know how proprietrary it is, but I gather that you're limited to what they provide you. Isn't the Palm VII the same way?

They seem to be missing some of the best things you can do on the net. Newsgroups, IM, IRC, POP3, IMAP4, and true HTTP web browsing.

Am I missing the mark, or are they?

"GoAmerica's Go.Web service for the Handspring Visor will allow individuals and businesses wireless access to POP3 email, the Internet and their corporate intranet using multiple nationwide wireless data networks. Go.Web's proprietary technology will optimize wireless data for the Visor to provide a full, non-clipped Internet experience."

Go.Web is ostensibly full access, so you should be able to get newsgroups, IRC, etc. I don't know if I'd be willing to shell out $50 a month for the service, though -- not to mention the springboard itself which, if the Palm Minstrels are any indication, will cost around $300. I'm holding out for the Glenayre pager. It's not full access but the service should be a lot cheaper and it will alert you when you receive an email, unlike the Palm VII and other modem-based units.

AvantGo released version 3.3, and it does a lot of what you are looking for. Take a look at the review the PalmInfocennter did on the browser.

Actually, if you sign up with GoAmerica I believe you can get the Minstrel III for only $100. Kinda like how the cellular companies give you a diso**** on the phone for signing up.

I like the idea of wireless access but the cost/benefit relationship is just not there for me. I don't travel daily so I can't see the point since I have access at work and at home. A frequent traveller may like the service though. I too am holding out for the Glenayre pager. I like the product specs and can't wait to see it.
