New Visor Rumors

The real question is, why didn't the Prism price drop?

It already dropped a month or so ago, down to $399. My guess is that the next color Visor device will be $450 or $499. Would be nice to get a lower priced one though.

We'll know soon enough...

If Staples already has the SKU#'s in their system for the VisorNeo/Pro (which they do today, talked to a Staples Rep via their website about a week ago today), it won't be long... We'll soon know the devices Handspring has yet to have released. I do find it interesting that no screen-shots of actual devices have surfaced by now. One thing is for sure, Handspring is doing a superb job of hiding the details of the soon to be released VisorDeluxe replacement. What little we do know via the SKU#'s is that it will be a 16MB device. That's really about all that is confirmed.

The Treo thing seems undoubtledly to be screw-up on the part of the FCC.

For both Palm and Handspring to make the same mistake within a day (not checking the box...) sounds to me like an Admin Assistant that was either a "Temp" or a soon to be "Temp"? Perhaps it was the "reader" that didn't see the "check".

Whatchathink????

L8r...

You completely lost me on that whole 'check' thing you did. Checking what box? Didn't see what check?

the report from the FCC stated that handspring and palm needed to check a box on the "fill out sheet" informing them not to relese any stuff untill the announcement.

Speaking of Visor prices, I remember when the $250 I paid for a VDx was reasonable to the $400+ of the Pocket PCs. Now don't call me blasphemous (my priest does all the time), but even for $399, a color Palm OS PDA seems less competitive with existing color Pocket PCs on the market. Don't get me wrong, I like Palm OS because of the simplicity, versatility, and the programs, and I like Handspring because of the expandability, but it seems consumers are asking that their handhelds do more with each year. I thought one of the reasons Jeff Hawkins left Palm (other than 3Com buying them out) was to focus on making a Palm OS PDA that was simpler and more cost effective? Isn't that why we can't flash our ROM? I know I'm probably not the only one to say it, but I just wanted to put it out there to see what everyone else thought. Feel free to disagree.

I have a Platinum now and I used to have a Deluxe. Guess what my dream PDA is now... the iPaq.

I'm sick of the B&W low-res small square screen. I'm sick of the OS that doesn't do any multimedia stuff natively. And of course, the main reason I feel this way is because I actually held one in my hand, and fell in love at that moment. The Micro$oft issue became irrelevant as soon as the beatiful color screen lit up in front of me, with its anti-aliased fonts, surrounded by the sleek aluminum case. My next PDA will most likely be the next iPaq.

PS. I've played with my friend's Sony Clie (the one with the 320x320 screen) and I think it's crap compared to the iPaq, while it's the same price. And all the other PocketPCs are irrelevant to me.

I'd have to agree with you. I recently began looking at some new replacments for my VPlat. While I love it, the iPAC is a sweet piece of technology, again, despite the M$ connection. If it weren't for my profession, and a need to carry around and view/mark-up AutoCAD drawings on something smaller than a laptop, I'd stick with the Visor/PalmOS combo. Untill something else comes around, well...I just don't know.

HS (and Palm) need to add all the functionality possible -- especially as it pertains to viewing and editing all types of documents, to maintain any kind of a PDA lead. That's the only way the form factor can remain the most important aspect. If the unit doesn't do what you need -- nothing else matters--

You might want to check out the latest issue of Pen Computing. One of the editors writes that he, too, LOVED the IPaq. He purchased one, and used it extensively. He also demo'ed it to all of his friends and family.

Well, THEY were so impressed, THEY went out and picked up an IPaq.

After a couple of months use, the crummy battery life and the large size effectively turned his beloved IPaq into a paperweight! On top of that, all of his friends and family members who had purchased the IPaq started coming up to him, and basically asking him "how much ya think I can get for my IPaq on e-bay!"

His point is that SIZE and battery life are critical components in making a PDA useful, and that the IPaq falls short on both of these counts.

Read the article, before you pick up your next "Paperweight"!

size AND weight, i agree... EXTREMELY important. my VDX is the max size and weight i will put up with. I hesitate to buy the Prism simply because of its weight and girth.

though i mourn the fact that the next colour visor will not doubt be extremely expensive for quite some time.

I thought the same thing about the Prism at first. But once you get used to it the Color outweighs the form factor by a lot. In fact having the curved edge on the back is very nice.

I compared the iPaq at the store by holding it right next to my Visor Platinum and I was surprised to see that they had almost the same dimensions, even the same thickness. However, the iPaq's larger screen makes the rest of the unit seem even smaller. The rounded shape also makes it seem smaller than it is. It is also lighter than my Visor Platinum, which I carry around with a Matchbook Drive and flash card. It's more pleasant to hold.

I will try to get a hold of the review, but it will probably be the first negative review of the iPaq I have ever seen, so far it seemed to me like the owners rave about it.

Finally, here's some news about the next iPaq:

Can you say "dream machine"?

I can smell new models coming...

Just to put my 2 cents in: I heard today in my local Manhattan Staples, woman was asking to buy a Visor Dlx, and salesman said that they stopped shipping them and the only choice she had was Solo or Prism. Sounds to me that we finally gonna get new models in near future, I'd say two weeks or so...

Bad news!

Bad news I'm afraid. It looks like the Neo and Pro are simply renamed/recolored Visor Deluxes and Platinums.

this sounds real and at the same time it doesnt. for example they say the new handhelds are already availble at some retailers but will be avaible world wide on monday. well im pretty sure that no one is selling the pro or neo just yet. and remember when they(i think it was them) said the new devices are expected to deliver on monday a looong time ago?(just based on rumors). and the handspring represenative telling them thing is just something i dont think i can fully believe.

They mean that these devices are already in the retail channel inventory. Meaning, they are in warehouses..not store shelves.
