Hi everyone.
I finally will get my VisorDeluxe in the end of February.
Ok, I have to admit I will have to make a trip to the US to get one ( I live in Europe). I sent it to one of my relatives ...blahblahblah...

I read in the forum, that the visor would show scratches, if used for some time. Cause of that I ordered the deluxe styli too, but since I will have no customer support here in Europe (Visor still NOT shipping here...), I wondered if some protective foil could help too.

WHICH FOIL SHOULD I GET? Where can I get it, when I'm in the US? I'll be in Seattle/WA about a week.

I'd be very grateful, if you guys could help me out...

Thanks, Eidos

Pick up some WriteRight protectors at BestBuy. They come in packages of 12 for $25. They seem to work the best, although I have read you can save money by using scotch magic tape. Personally, I would rather protect the $250 investment since it quickly has become my primary source of information about my life!!!

You can use the self-stick lamination sheets, cut to size. I got some for about $3 for two 8.5 x 11 sheets.

There are a few threads elsewhere on VC on this topic, too.

Hmm. Thanx. Are those the ones from concept kitchen?
I tried their web site, but it was down. I went to palmgear hq, cause they had a tutorial how to put them on, but it was also not available. coincidence?
ARE THEY STILL AVAILABLE?

Thanx

Can I order them online somewhere?

but there is one more thing:

does bestbuy have these WriteRights on stock?
I'd hate to go there and find out, they don't. Otherwise I'd order online.

I live in Seattle and don't think we have Best Buy here - confirm that with your relatives.

Buy Write Rights on-line (too expensive for me personally) or you could also try 3M laminated sheets that I have read about in threads here that are Post-it type adhesive and MAY be available in a Seattle office supply store like Office Max or Office Depot. Again I don't know if our office supply stores have these products, but we do have a healthy selection of national office supply stores here.

Local places that sell PDA's and supplies here include:
COMPUSA and several big office stores as mentioned.

I just got my Visor today and am waiting for my Panache stylus. Doubt I'll get any screen protection at this point.

Good luck!

WriteRights are available at the University of Washington Computer Store on the corner of 44th and University Avenue in Seattle, WA. I was there just last night (2/3) and saw that they had them in stock -- I did not check the price... but the UW Bookstore is very competitive with the discount stores. They also had the PDA Survival Kit.

I don't live in the states either but in Mexico where WriteRight aren't available. Don't think "foil" is the right word. Vinyl is.

Got my IVDx while in the states in December (love it - but no one ever talks about the 9 different calculators - 3 of which let one convert area - length and temp - great for mult cultural business) and tried the transparencies first. They scratch worst then the actual face of the Visor might but at least it was a protection and available here - UNTIL I got up north again and bought a piece of thin vinyl at a fabric store (try Jo-Ann but don't know if they are in the Seattle area).

12 inches by 6 feet cost me 75. Cut it into 60 x 80 mm rectangles with notched corners. (That leaves a gap at the edges for easy removal late). Used just one for over a month and figure the balance is gonna last me till Handspring comes out with a color version the size of a Vx.

The vinyl "clings" via static electricity and the only trick is to use just a bit of soapy water on a very clean piece. That lets you use a credit card to smooth out the bubbles.

It's great - less glare then the transparencies - less cost too.

Only problem was when I went over the mountains in a car at 10,400 feet - it seemed to make the "cling" go away. (Which BTW doesn't seem to happen in airplanes.) I just peeled the protector off and used some more soapy water to but it back on.

For less then 1 each - works great.

Also got a deluxe stylus. The built in screw driver and reset pin is neat but quickly replaced it with a Cross DigitalWriter (PDA Panache sells a Cross and Montblanc refill with orange tip that might be even better for US$6 + s/h.) The digital & Panache point are a great deal finer then the POS or Deluxe stylus or Panache - no scratches and superior character recognition. Plus feels like I'm actually writing with something instead of poking at the screen with a plastic toothpick.

Now when I get my E&B slip case with belt clip and figure out how to IRD hotsync with my ThinkPad and other handheld devices I'll be a happy camper.

I figured I'd spend the $$$ on WriteRights than screw up on a custom screen or risk screen gunk from using Scotch tape. I've never regretted it since.

Now I just have to force myself to use DateBook+ instead of appt on my unix shell like I'm used to.

Just be careful, you can scratch the screen even with the Writerights on.

I dutifully went to Outpost and got my WriteRights and applied it. Worked hard to get it aligned and all the bubbles out and then used it for a while and HATED the way it looked on my Visor. I hated to loss of sharpness and contrast and I hated the "kind" of glare the WriteRight produces. It is inaccurate to say that the WriteRight eliminates the glare on a PDA screen; for me me it replaces one type of glare which I find easy to deal with (by subtle movement of the hand or eye) with another type of contrast which I found more difficult to deal with.

(But remember, I wear glasses as opposed to contacts because I feel my vision is sharper with specticles.)

After a couple of hours with the WriteRight on, I removed it and returned to the 811 removeable tape over the Grafitti area. Now, I have 11 unused WriteRights and I do not know whether to save them to try again at some later date or to give them to PDA user friends as Xmas presents.

For those who don't like WriteRights, you might want to try getting some Carnuba wax at an auto supply store and putting a few coats on the screen.

As far as I can tell, I have picked up no new screen scratches since putting on the wax. The grafitti area is getting a little less shiny, so I'll throw another coat on soon. I waxed right over the scotch tape numeric keypad numbers I added, and it's fine.

No loss of contrast. Yes, it still glares, but as others have mentioned, that glare can be dealt with.

For those in the states I recommend "clear decals" from invent it. They come in packs of 10 for 8.99 one sheet makes about 9 protectors so the pack of ten makes 90 protectors. They look like they will last for quite a while, just by the wear and tear on mine so far. Also, they use NO adhedsive but they attach just fine using static electricity. They are easy to remove and replace, cheap, and will not screw up your screen. I've read a bit about laminates warping your screen on removal. Whether this is true or applies to the visor I don't know...what I read was regarding the cassiopea and laminates.
