Question Help - trying to rescue Visor Deluxe

i'm having serious problems with my Visor Deluxe. First, i had a sudden problem sync'ing data to my desktop (G4 AGP, MacOS 9, Palm Desktop 2.6) and i was unable to restore from my backup module. i hard reset the Visor and tried to sync again with only the default Palm Desktop apps but my Visor has a lot of difficulty completing the sync successfully and is very unstable. i've tried sync'ing just one basic app at a time but i can't seem to get all my data back from Datebook+, Memos, To Do List and the Address book. i certainly don't have enough data in those apps to fill the memory and i didn't install any third party apps in the process. i even get fatal errors after a successful sync while it is just sitting idle in the USB cradle. The Palm Desktop works fine, i can see all my data there and manipulate it without a problem, nothing appears to be corrupted AFAIK. i purchased the device in the summer of 2000, so maybe this is just a sign for me to upgrade, but i don't want to do that if i'm going to have the same problem and can't recover data from the desktop. Anyone have any suggestions to troubleshoot this and figure out what's wrong? Thanks for your help.

The only thing that comes to mind is a battery issue.

Perhaps your batteries are low. Have you tried changing them?

Otherwise, you might try checking the cradle and the bottom of the Visor to make sure all of your contacts look okay.

Take an eraser and go over the contacts on the bottom of the Visor in an effort to "clean" them.

Let us know if any of the above fails to work and maybe someone else can offer insite.

Also, take a look at the HotSync Log and let us know if there are any Error Messages generated.

Yes, i forgot to mention that i did try another set of freshly charged NiMH rechargeable batteries. i've always used NiMH rechargeables with the unit and this set of batteries was a pair that are relatively new and haven't been used/recharged much.

i did try to clean the contacts on the cradle and the Visor, but i didn't use an eraser. i'll give that a try and see if that works. As for error messages in the Hotsync log, unfortunately, some of the errors have been time outs where the desktop loses communication with the Visor and stops the hotsync, but the Visor remains frozen till i soft reset. i do have a lot of error #25616 when things have failed to install or sync properly. What really baffles me is that the unit seems really unstable - system preferences seem to change inexplicably or revert to defaults even when i hotsync successfully, and i still have no clue why i would get fatal errors after a successful hotsync when the unit is just sitting there in the cradle doing nothing. Something is corrupt and i'm hoping it is not my data. And yes, i've reinstalled the Desktop from scratch and copied the User Data files and this still doesn't work. Thanks for suggestion on the contacts. Willing to try anything at this point to see if i can rescue this thing.

Do you have access to another PC? You could install the desktop software there and see if it's a problem with your VDX or your PC.
