The title says it all. We have a 15 or so computer network at work and we want to add a mac to it (with file sharing, IP sharing, the whole works). My boss is getting the mac at my behest. It's a used PowerMac G4 (not that it makes a difference, just thought I'd sate potential curiosity).

As an aside, how in the hell do (did?) people put up with those round mice? The thing is driving me insane!

It should be fairly easy to do this. After you plug the mac into the network you need to goto Apple->Control Panels->TCP/IP and correctly configure those settings. I don't have a mac so I can't gaurantee that that will work but am almost positive that it will.

In terms of the round mice have your boss go buy the pro keyboard and pro mouse so it is an oliptical mouse. The pro mouse is really nice, we have them at school, and I would buy one for my pc if they would work with them.

I've got the optical mouse, but that round one at work is enough to drive me batty. I've stooped to taking my own mouse to work (is it too late to seek counseling?).

Dick,

What version of Windows are you running?

Are you networked with NT servers, or just peer-to-peer (all desktops, no servers)?

Have you tried the MS web site?

If not, you can search of Apple, Macintosh or G4 (or other combinations) to see if you can find anything to help.

Also, if you provide the answers to my questions, I'll see what I can find in TechNet for you.

Thanks all. To answer some questions.

1. all machines are Win 95, 98, or Me
2. it's a peer to peer network
3. I've checked around the net a bit, but the answers I found were much too convoluted and/or had nothing to do with my query, so I came here.
4. My employer is leaning toward VPC (it's slightly cheaper and he's more or less mac illiterate).

Two options:

1: pop-off the colored 'side panels' so the mouse is no longer round.

2: throw it away and get a decent mouse like the Microsoft Intellimouse.
