Memory stick types?
By: ashmed @ 08:39 AM

Since i'll probably jumping ship in the next few months for the Sony NR70, what's the difference between the Magic Gate MS and the regular MS? I'm looking at purchasing a 128mb memory stick for mp3's and maybe another smaller memory stick for programs and data.

Thanks.

magicgate sticks are more expensive. you can only play ATRAC files if you have a magicgate stick. that is because they support some form of copy protection/DRM. so you NEED a magicgate stick if you have a sony network walkman(which ONLY plays ATRAC).

but otherwise, you don't need 'em.

Ashmed,
Just missed a great deal on MS's at CompUSA. As discussed HERE. I now have 1 x 128 that I've yet to even halfway fill up and I've been adding movie shorts and TONS of pictures, games, books, a full MS backup, etc. I've not used the second 128 stick I have at all *yet*. The 32 is basically a disaster recovery backup I leave at home. As stated, you don't need the MSgate unless you are dealing with copyprotection mp3's. Also, the Lexars work fine and will save you a good bit over the Sonys.

I was really biased against the MS until I started using one. Things are amazing when coupled with the PDA formfactor.

BTW, go ahead and jump ship, I promise, it's a whole new world. Much better. (Never thought I'd say that)

A little more detail on the MagicGate sticks: As Thorin says, the only difference is that they can play ATRAC-encoded music on them. All kinds of Memory Sticks can play MP3s.

I understand that ATRAC is a better-sounding, more faithul encoding method (at least for the compression size), but I haven't compared them, and I have a tin ear anyway. (Which has kept the price of stereo equipment very low for me.)
