I was just reading through all of the messages on the wireless forum, and realized that there are not any that list what software people use to browse the web, chat, or do anything on their visors with the minstrel modems.
I just got my modem in the mail today (YEAH!!!!!), and I am curious what software will work for me. I am intrested in blazer, AIM, and PQA's (although I'm not sure if their going to work for me).

Ben

I use all of them.. PQA's WILL work on YADA YADA but you have to go thru some contortions to do it, that new PQA browser looks promising without all the fuss. I was also using Palmscape till the beta expired on 12/31/2000. Blazer works well in most cases however on a few sites it falters. I also use Avantgo where Blazer doesn't work (i.e. http://www.boston.com )

Hi,

I have a VDX and am able to establish a PPP connection to my employer's network via a wireline modem (Thinmodem from CardAccess) and my cellular phone (Motorola StarTAC). I have successfully used ftp and telnet programs for my handheld to access these computers, but I have not been able to get a browser to work. I have tried Blazer, YadaBrowse, and AvantGo's browser, all without success. My employer's network IS behind a firewall, so that could be part of the problem, but I think the bigger problem is that I don't understand what the browser is trying to do. For instance, why do I need to set up a Server in all of these browsers? Don't they work like IExplore and Netscape? Why can't I just request an http page without going through a "server"?

Any tips anyone?

TIA

My employer also has a firewall that uses "proxy" servers. Proxy based firewalls are not the same as a NAT based firewall (NAT = Name address translation). The way a proxy based firewall works is you are cut off TOTALLY from the internet and have to go thru the proxy machine to access the net, only the proxy machine(s) can see the internet, it does all the web surfing on your behalf. I'd bet you'd have to configure your Palm's web browsers (if possible) to use your employers proxy settings to be able to "see" the net. If you are not sure about proxy firewall's do a search on http://www.google.com for more information on what a proxy firewall is and how they work, then go talk to your company's tech support people for the specifics you need (each company is "potentially" different)..

Now, the other part of the problem is, Most if not all Palm web browsers actually go thru their own special servers as the Palm Pilot doesn't have enough power to handle a full (graphical) web page, these special "servers" take your web page request and digest the web page into a format your Palm can cope with , then push it back to you. IF you can not reach these "special" servers thru your employers firewall your palm web browsers will fail. So when you use Avantgo or Blazer, Palmscape etc.. you are not really "surfing" the web directly, the blazer or Avantgo web-page digestion server is surfing for you and pushing the data back to you.

That annoyed me, but there's a new beta available now.

Palmscape

Please post the url for Palmscape beta. I can't seem to find it. Thank you.

I have best success with Blazer, YY Browser, and AvantGo (with images off). Ebay on blazer seems like a PQA.

Palmscape's URL is http://isv07.ilinx.co.jp/en/

Speaking of speed.. I'd rank the programs from fastest to slower in this order:

(all with graphics enabled)

1. PQA's
2. Blazer
3. Palmscape
4. Yada Browser-(only because you have to wait for the whole page to be sent)
5. Avantgo

I think if we could cross Palmscape and Blazer you would have the perfect program. Blazer for speed, Palmscape for general compatibility.

Thumbs down Palmscape site issues

Has anyone tried to download this in the last couple of days? Pages take forever to load and the download never completes for me.
