Question

HI,

I just recently got a Visor Prism, Omnisky Modem/Service and a 8 meg backup module. The reason I got this setup, is so that when I travel I can leave my laptop at home. I have encountered several crashes this past week, that required several hard resets.

I've run into a strange problem. The 8meg backup module should backup the complete visor, with all its files, correct?

Here's what I have encountered:

1. Have the Minstrel S & Omnisky working properly.
2. Do a complete backup with the 8 meg card.
3. Do a hard reset.
4. Restore with the 8 meg card
5. Plug modem back in

All should work fine, execpt that after the restore from the 8 meg card, I get an omnisky error "Unable to connect with Modem."

The only way I can get the modem to work again, is to:
1. Do a hotsync to the desktop
2. plugin the modem
3. Omnisky then says that some file are corrupt or missing
4. Omnisky reinstalls them

Then the modem works again.

If I need to do a hotsync everytime I have to hard reset it basically blows my whole idea out of the water of being able to travel without my laptop.

Any ideas?

robrink,

Make certain that you have the modem power switch turned off when removing it. Also, if you first don't succeed with a modem connection try try again. The boot sequence of the modem often requires two trys in order to connect.

The other possibility is that the ISP number might not be correct but that's a task for Omnisky tech support to verify.

Go to the Minstrel program and then view if the modem is connecting to all 3 options. Tech support will probably have you view the Advanced option to check some specifics.

The "can't connect to modem" is fairly common even on the Minstrel for the Palm V so check this Minstrel connection screen and under the Advanced option you will note the actual signal strength which is listed as -db. If the value is not at least -92 db then your probably not going to connect. Move around and see if the strength is better in different locations the better the number is the lower the number so a reading of -70db is better than -92db.

Make certain you have a full battery and then give the above a try.

Hope some of this helps.

Hi,

Actually, my service signal is perfect in my area. never have a problem with that. Its just when what I explained above happens. And the only way to get the modem working again is a hotsync after a hard reset.

I'm thinking could it be a problem with the backup module. The backup module should reinstall everything like it was before the hard reset.

Talking

Had same problem with same setup, but the answer is as above, after restoring from back up module, you have to go to the minstrel icon open it then wait until the 3 boxes are checked, and then go back to omnisky and connect.
that is what I do . and works all the time.

OK, I'll give that a try.

Also, I just found another work around.

1. Did a hard reset
2. Plugged in modem after reset.
3. Modem installed lost files
4. Did a restore from the backup module
5. Everything works!

I was surprised that the module would not overwrite what the modem installed.

Ok, I tried the other way, opening Minstrel and waiting..but the problem is, as soon as I open Minstrel, I get the error:

A connection with the Minstrel is not available. Please select reconnect or cancel the operation.

I've let it sit for 10 minutes, and if I hit reset nothing works.

My way that I found, *listed above* seems to be the way for me to get it working from a module reinstall.

Angry Wireless/Backup Problem

Greetings,

I'm using the Yadayada service and I'm running into *EXACTLY* the same problem with my Minstrel S modem and the Backup Module on my Prism.

I had to get Yadayada tech support on the line, and we had to completely redo many of my settings in order to get back up & running again.

So is the issue the Backup Module, or the modem or the Visor?

Happy thanksgiving!

Next time you have to do a hard reset, try my directions from about 2 messages ago. It works for me with Omnisky.
