Unhappy Prism2? Don't hold your breath!

I just spoke with Julie at HS Sales. I played dumb and asked if there was something new with which I could replace my Prism. Of course there is nothing. I then asked her about the rumors I have read about a color edge. She told me that she has heard that they are working on one, but the sales department has not been told of one being released. She also told me that they are generally informed of upcoming releases three months ahead of time.

So, don't hold your breath for a color edge a.k.a. Prism2. The release of such a beast is at the very least three months out.

I'm trying really hard to wait for a Prism2 or color edge, but the m515 and clie's look really nice these days. The only thing keeping me from moving away from HS is the HUGE investment I have in springboard modules. How was I to know that the springboard slot that I thought would be a wonderful capability would become the shackles that bind me to HS.

Out of curiosity, which SB modules do you have?

I was in a similar position. I wanted to wait because I had (and USED) a few springboard modules. But upon further examination, I realized that the model that I wanted to 'upgrade' to offered most of what I had my SB modules to do. If it didn't, then there was some workaround either already available or waiting to be released.

Now, this was just me. The modules that I had/used were around to essentially "enhance" my Prism (BeatPlus, Memplug, VisorPhone, HandCam, etc etc). So naturally upgrading to a newer device provided me with replacements 'built-in'. But I know there are a lot of SBs out there that one wouldn't likely see as a new PDA 'feature' (Massager Module and PowerNapping module come to mind).

Also, you DO take a hit if you pawn the SBs off on Ebay or something, so if it's simply a monetary issue then it may not be ideal.

My SB's

Sorry to repeat this from another thread, but since you asked here is the list:

Hagiwara Backup & 8MB Flash Module - favorite
Eyemodule
Eyemodule2
Magellan GPS Companion
ThinModem Plus
Two 8MB Flash Modules
Backup Module
InnoPak/2V (my poor substitute for the vaporware Six-Pak)
InnoPocket FlashPlus w/ 128MB card
Presenter to Go
Hagiwara 16MB Flash Module

Also a sizable investment in accessories:

Stowaway Keyboard
Purple Data Cable - serial travel hotsync cable for pocketHMI
FlipLid and FlipClip
Blue Sport Case from GoInCase
Travel Charger
USB hotsync cable
Serial Cradle

The ones that don't seem to be "features" of other PDA's are Presenter to Go, ThinModem Plus, Eyemodules, GPS, etc. As you say, even with Ebay, I would take a monetary hit if I tried to sell these and buy in-kind replacements that work with another PDA. That is why they have become my HS "shackles".

I have been looking at the T615 a lot lately. I might get a job at Circuit City where people working there get to buy items at cost after 2 months. I have bought a few modules for my Pro, and there are things that I like more about the Pro than the T615. After thinking about it though, I realize that I don't have to give up the Pro if I get the T615.

I have the Magellan GPS springboard module. I love it... and the long battery life of my mono-screen Pro makes the combo great for long trips. The T615 would be dead in hours. I realized though, that I can still use my Pro on trips with the GPS, buying the Clie doesn't make my Pro quit working.

I know everyone is not in a position to keep thier current PDA when they get a new one, but if you are, why not keep both and use both? I would use the Clie for day to day PIM.. book reading...... stuff like that. I could get the Memplug MS version and easily share maps, books, whatever between the Pro and the Clie. The Pro doesn't fit in my pocket as nice as a Clie, so it could stay in the car, and be used primarily for GPS. I could also get the Omniremote module and let the Pro reside on my coffee table as a TV remote.

Just my thoughts on how you don't have to give up the advantages of your current device when you buy a new one. I am not going to get anything new for at least a couple months... I hope the new Clies come out here and drive the cost (store cost that is ;-) ) of the T series down so I can grab a 615 cheap.

Post Please not in the Edge format!

If another color version is coming the last thing I want is to have it in the Edge format. I say that they should fit in the exact same form factor the VDX, Neo, Pro, Plat etc... use. That way all your extra cradles, cases, keyboards and other stuff would still fit!

Thanks

You folks make excellent points. I can still use my Prism with the GPS or presenter-to-go and the Edge would have to use that caddy hunch-back thing.

My dream come true would be a prism2 in a vdx case, but I have not heard of anything like that coming from HS. I am leaning more and more away from HS for my next PDA, and Please, no flames about getting off the fence

Handcuffs

I just wanted to say that my modules and $99.00 Stowaway are what is keeping me chained to HS. I have a "Sprint Digital Link" module for my phone. It cost $250 and at the time seemed like a good Idea. I also have Xircom 802.11b wireless $200.00, HS Modem $99.00, SM Memplug $49.00, 2 128meg Smart Media $99.00, So that is close to $700.00 not to mention the Stylus and cases I also have. The Prism new cost me $450.00.

It is sure nice how I helped support HS and promoted their products and modules to my friends. Now to feel like a idiot. HS has left me high and dry with the "Spring Board" stuff that I cannot use in other devices. My Prism is on it last leg. Buzzing when turned on when it dies I will be out of luck (Now I am out of warranty). I will have to buy a new phone and PDA. I will not buy another Prism. I am on my 4th one. Enough is enough.

Even a new Color "CDMA" Treo would ease the pain but that isn't even in the works I hear.

I best stop now. I could go on for hours about this.

**Update**
I just read a Color "CDMA" Treo might be on the way. I hope I am not just getting lead down a alley only to get beat up all over again...
