PIC is a lit up over it.

Man, sony is really going to throw down with the other Palm folks. With this many different models, and with the market so small, and priced so cheap... They're segmenting the market... I can't believe they're doing much more than recouping their development costs (if that) with this many models coming so fast and furious.

IMO, Sony's essentially buying the Palm market, they're putting great stuff out there (Might as well call this new one Palm Vaio!), but if they're making significant money on them I'd be surprised. They're taking losses and gobbling market share. For a company with reserves, seems like a good strategy. but can the little guys compete?

Sony is kickin' the Palm Inc. R&D in the ass. Man what a neat device. Very Edge like as well. I know some say its ugly but it looks very stylish. This is gonna be another successful device by Sony.

I think the memory stick is here to stay!!

Palm really needs to give up on hardware and leave it to Handspring and Sony.

I was wondering when you'd chime in.

I think that Palm has a place: as the midrange professional device. yes, this new sony has got more gizmos, but it doesn't have the Palm brand. The Palm brand is important here (somebody with more care than I post a link to the survey that showed branding to be the #1 factor in PDA purchases). As long as they continue to make basic PDAs that meet exec. needs, they should hang around.

Standard user: Palm
Gizmo User: HS
Uber User: Sony
Other: Handera, Acer, etc.

There are good photos over at Palminfocenter: http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID=2465. This is a very sexy device - 320x320, jog dial, memory stick, etc.

So damn thin! And one of the coolest features (I think) is the enhanced IR and remote control software that comes with the product... I've always kind of wanted the Omniremote module, but from everything I've read it's not all that reliable. Such a simple thing to build in, but it lends a lot of additional usefulness to the device.

Yeah, it's monochrome and doesn't have Springboard (that distinction may become less important in the future if anyone actually starts rolling out memorystick hardware like the camera that somebody was working on, ethernet, modem, etc...), but Sony has put together a really great package for a pretty low price.

Come on, Handspring!

OK... I think this is the one that gets me to leave HandSpring. Or if not, it's forebearer.

I'll need to get my hands on it and play with it, to take a look at the buttons and the fonts -- but damn, Sony's pretty much given me exactly what I asked for. (Yes, color [i]would[/b] be nice, but...) And like the other Clies, it has Flash.

I love the sound capabilities; and I love the programmable remote capabilities (though I already have a Philips Pronto -- but a backup would be nice, wouldn't it?) And they'll have an MP3 player add-on for it. Oh, yes.

Main thing would be, does it sync (like the N760C/N610C) with Sony's serial cradle? (I'm still running NT 4). Well, if not, means I just wait until I get a USB PC in the near future; and it'll take that long for Vaja and others to come out with a good belt-clip case for the T415.

Again, I'll have to wait to play with it -- but I think Sony has decided to grab the Palm PDA market from HandSpring, and maybe Palm. If HandSpring plans to respond, they better do it damn quick.

Any rumors of a color version of the T415?

Yes. A leaked Sony website provides information on a 320x320, MP3 playing, color device. It's a bit thicker, .67", but should cost about $500...
Check it out here

Or in other words, why in the heck would you need a Color T415 when the 760C is already available? What would be the point?

From Yahoo Finance:

Handspring Market Capitilization - $274,000,000 (million)

Palm Market Capitilization - $1,350,000,000 (billion)

Sony Market Capitilization - $37,800,000,000 (billions)

Sony is twenty-eight times bigger than Palm, and one hundred and thirty seven times bigger than HandSpring. They could double the # of models in their Palm OS line without even shedding a flake of dandruff. I'm just glad they're on OUR side, and not in league with the Evil Empire.

My m505 is going to make a really cool antique!

Let's see:

1) Thinner, lighter and more stylish form factor
2) Less holes in casing to let dust in/under screen
3) Built-in vibrating alarm
4) Stronger IR w/ remote control SW (760c's IR has a range of about 2 feet)

On the other hand, I think they should have placed the jog dial higher on the left edge -- it looks like they put it in approx. the same place as on the 760c, which is too low to hold the unit comfortably in your hand and still easily roll the jog dial with your thumb. I'm also worried about the buttons -- depending on their stiffness, they may not be as bad as the 760c for game-playing, but that up/down rocker looks worse than the 760c's (which is already pretty awful)

Why is a color T415 better than a N760c

Add onto that:

  1. Expanded alarm sounds -- you can convert WAV and other files to alarm sounds for the T415. (Geeky cool fun.)
  2. And the biggie for me: maybe the buttons won't suck. I hate the buttons on the N700/N600 series Clies. I like the new convex buttons (do they click?), though the "rocker" button looks even odder than the other Clies.
Oh, well, I'll have to wait and get my hands on it to try it out.

This is it. Even edgier than the edge.

It can be jerry-rigged to work with mac, right?

At $299 this thing will kill the Edge. I will guaruntee a price drop when the 415 is available. Also, for the same price as the Pro, which is more important, memory and Springboard, or resolution and size?

Since I don't have any Springboards for my VD, I would go for the 415. Size is the most important factor for me. Having said that, I am not going to get either, I'm waiting for the Treo.

Did anyone else notice the screen? It's black on white. Even their screenshot of the 300 series shows degrees of green. I'm interested to see how accurate that really is.

I think there's a disclaimer that it's a "simulated" screenshot (at least on the Sony site.)

Still... wouldn't THAT be cool? 16-bit grayscale might be close enough to color for me that I wouldn't care.
