OK.. here's the problem.

I recently built a RH7.1 box and upgraded it to Gnome 1.4 I installed the Pilot Link software off Ximians site. When I tried to run the Pilot Configure, here's the steps I ran.

1.- left the port as /dev/pilot
2.- Selected Handspring Visor with USB
3.- Selected the "I have synced with this device"
4.- Got to the screen that told me to hit the hotsyc button
5.- After a few moments, the Visor errored out connecting.

I tried all the othe creating a symb link between /dev/pilot and ttyUSB1.

Whatever I do, something hangs up.

I can't speak to your exact situation, but I use the bare bones pilot-xfer w/Mandrake 7.2. Your symbolic link sounds correct. I don't know how Ximian's pilot link package works, but for pilot-xfer to work correctly, USB Hotsync has to be initiated first on the visor and then on the computer. If you need more debugging help, type "tail -50 /var/log/messages | grep USB" just after initiating Hotsync on the visor. This will tell you if the system is detecting your visor as a USB device.

While you're at it, you might want to try to setup a net connection to your visor. TCP/IP over USB is always good for a grin, especially with a USB Hotsync cable, and is the only way I can dependably update my visor's AvantGo selections through my linux box. Malsync is undependable over USB.

This is when I am attempting to get it to see the name from within Gnome Pilot. I never get the "next" screen to come up. It just seems to hang, although there is some sort of activity happening.

I tried to get Gnome Pilot to work on my Linux box and it seems to stall just as you described. The program seems to be able to bind /dev/pilot but then hangs. I thought it or gpilotd might need to run as root but I haven't been able to confirm this, because it fails with some weird errors. I came across some Gnome Pilot mail archives at www.gnome.org/gnome-pilot , but I didn't have time to go through them. You might want to look through them if you're committed to Gnome Pilot or else give JPilot or KPilot a try. I don't typically use the Hotsync software that comes with linux, because pilot-xfer fulfills my basic file backup/installation needs.

I'm not committed either way. The box crashed hard today and I need to rebuild it anyway. To be honest, while I like the look and feel of Gnome 1.4, I've had too many issues with it. I'll try pilot-xfer. Thanks for the help.
