In case anyone's interested, there's finally a dictionary module available for $50.00 -- why it's taken so long for someone to come out with one is beyond me...seems like it should have been one of the first modules:

I have been waiting for this since it was announced. I think I will order it this week. I had the same question about the time it took to release this module, and I've noticed that Franklin seems to be releasing a flood of modules lately. Isn't it great that there are 3 pages of module to choose from @ palmgear now! Bout time!!! Thanks for the heads up!

Hate to sound like a cheapskate, but $50???? I'd be happy to pay $20-$25 for a Dictionary and Thesarus(which I NEED) but $50 is still kinda high for a book...now if it could be employeed as a spellcheck while writing in memopad and other apps, I'd be all over it.

Am I off base here?

I couldn't find details about the module on http://www.franklin.com

I was hoping to see screen shots or some facts about how interoperable it is with other apps.

I just ordered this module today and got an e-mail saying that it is currently backordered (I am also waiting on the memory access). No shipping date was given in the message. Hope I don't have to wait too long...

I think the module is the same as the 29.95 downloadable version which I have on my 8MB Flash Springboard. They are both advertised as having 100,000 definitions. The dictionary is merely fair, not great. It's along the lines
of a paperback dictionary and not a full-fledged complete dictionary. I would have hoped they would take advantage of the springboard to make that version a larger, complete dictionary, but apparently they've just stuck the downloadable version onto a Springboard and are charging more money for it. The downloadable version occupies 2606K and works fine from the 8MB Flash module.

Dictionary accessible in other applications?

Does the dictionary work with other applications? Can you use it like Word Complete or, if you look up a word, can you insert it into MemoPad, email, etc.? Will it operate as a spell checker? Just curious.

The version I have (downloadable, not springboard) does not integrate with other applications. It cannot be used as a word completion or spell checking tool. You can copy from the dictionary and paste into other applications.

Here is my 11/8/2000 email with (un)official reply from Franklin.

"I am interested in the software download of the Merriam Webster Dictionary. I have a few questions:
1. Is there any difference between the software download and the Springboard Module of the dictionary? If so, what are the differences?
2. Does the program interact with other applications on the Visor?
For example, is the dictionary accessible from the MemoPad or Email applications? Can it act like a spell checker? Can it act like the Word Complete application to suggest words to complete spelling?

Agreed. I would buy a full-size dictionary, even at twice the price of the Franklin offering. Of course, an OmniSky or YadaYada user could always lookup the word via the web (e.g. http://www.onelook.com/ ).

I remember http://www.arslexis.com has Noah Pro for about $19.95 with 122,000 words in the dictionary. I believe it is a bit of a hog on memory--5Mb. This might be perfect for storage in a Springboard module. If only my ThinModem memory was larger.
