Question

Yesterday I noticed the small rim on the back of my BVD where the cover snaps on was cracked. I have read on this forum that this is not an uncommon problem. So I called Handspring and within 10 minutes of dialing the number, I had spoken to a tech rep and customer service rep who agreed to replace my Visor free of charge. I was told it would be a week before I got it, but to my surprise, it arrived today!!! Less than 24 hours after I spoke with Handspring.

Anyway, on to my question. In comparing the new BVD and my old BVD, the screens appear different. The new BVD has a much more greenish tint to it and appears to be easier to read. Does anyone know when and why Handspring changed the screens on the Visor? And is this suppose to be an upgraded screen? I would assume so. Is it suppose to be comparable to the Palm V screen? Just wondering.

Out of pure curiosity ...didn't they ask for your old Visor back when they sent you the replacement?

I'm sure they did ask for it back, but not until he got his new one. You send your old one back in the box that the new one was sent in.

I noticed the same on my replacement. The screen SEEMS to be clearer and has the greenish tint. I even compared the two side by side. I could not adjust my original unit to be as clear as the replacement. It could be just some quality control issue. I don't know.
And yes, you don't send the unit back until you receive the replacement.

Homer - the other two are right. They ask you return the defective one in the replacement box. They even include pre-paid FED-EX two day shipping, so it doesn't cost you a dime!

I had a somewhat related problem. I noticed after buying the 5 pack styli, my screen was getting pretty hacked up. After about 2 months use, my Graffiti area was trashed. I called Handspring just to see if this is a common problem, and when I hung up, they were shipping me a new Visor.

I got it in about 2 days and now I'm trying to sycronize the data between the two units. Fingers crossed, I hope I don't lose any data.

Just to add to the topic here - I also received a repalcement Blue VDX - my first one was having sync issues and the case was coming apart. Anyway, they sent me a new visor with the Fed Ex slip inside. I was able to compare the two units before I put the defective one in the box. I did notice a very different screen on the replacement unit - goldish hue and sharper resoulution. The only issue is the contrast settings are not as definitive as my old, inferior screened unit...

I just tried to call HS about the scratched screen on my Graphite Visor Deluxe. Unfortunately, they were closed for the day. I'll try them again week after next (next week I'm on vacation). I wanted to ask, though, is there a particular way to present the problem to the CS folks that might better ensure that I get a replacement?

Thanks in advance. Otherwise I just LOVE my Visor.

CaneGuru:

How did you scratch up the screen? Did you receive a defective stylus? If you did receive a defective stylus then you can tell Handspring CS that the stylus scratched up your screen. This being said, it is important that you change your stylus if this is the case. I don't think handspring will be replacing scratched screens for free for very long because it eats into their finances. All that being said, I have never heard of a situation where a customer get turned down for a replacement.

Yep. Original stock stylus scratched up the screen the the first day. Didn't notice it at first. Scratches were definitely from the stylus and before I started reading about scratched screens and styli here. A few days later, after reading the boards here, I replaced the stylus and started using screen protectors. As others have said, it is really astounding how cheesy the original stylus is. I've calendared to call HS right away when I return from vacation. Thanks!

Where did you get screen protectors? Is it something we buy and place on the screen to protect it from scratches?

Exclamation

There are a number of screen protectors you can use. The most popular are WriteRights. I actually use the Windows CE WriteRights on my Visor because I prefer the smooth surface, but the Palm III style are also very popular... they have a textured surface that acts as an anti-glare coating on the monochrome screen but leads to artifacting on the smaller pixels of a color screen.

Best price for WriteRights is at buy.com.

Reading another VC post, I discovered a relatively cheap way to protect your screen: removeable tape. Although the texture is more grainy than the original visor screen (and it works better if you have a replacement visor), you can buy "removeable" tape for about $2 bucks which is the perfect width for the graffiti area on the visor. When the tape starts to lose its effectiveness, just peel it off and put on a new strip.

Cool

Follow-up... I emailed HS about the screen scratch issue early this week and got my replacement Visor today with a box & labels to ship it back with. New unit looks clean... Can't tell if it's new or reconditioned. I did *ask* for a new one. Looks new....

I'm happy and won't make the same mistake of not using a screen protector.

Have a great weekend!

I had my Visor replaced because it was cracking where the case clips in, and on the outside corner that holds in the springboard. I've read about different screens coming on the visors, so I checked for that, but I couldn't notice anything different. Did you guys just put the Fed-ex thing right on the box and send it back, or did you put it in something else first?
