Talking VP and VStream

I got my Visor Phone just the other day, and I'm surfing like crazy now in NYC. I followed Heberman and others' settings in this thread and have no problem using Blazer 2.0 as well as One-Touch for my email.

My VoiceStream service is a simple $30 plan with no specific data minutes. My ISP is my university, who's email is IMAP. It's been no problem to send and receive messages though, through my Univ. account, using One Touch.

On my Modem settings I have not been able to choose "custom," the only option is "standard," which has worked fine.

I've been using this for quite some time, and then suddenly it stopped working.

I reconfigured my settings, and it now works again! I'm using a Nokia 8290 and a Visor Edge (OS 3.5)

Here are the settings:

System(Category)/Preferences/Connection
====================
Configuration: Custom
<edit>
Name: Voicestream ISDN
Connection Method: IrCOMM to Modem
Dialing: TouchTone
Volume: Off
<Details>
Speed: 9,600
Flow Ctl: Automatic
Init String: AT&FX4;+CBST=71,0,1;&W

System/Preferences/Network
================
Service: VoiceStream
User Name: (enter a space)
Password: (enter a space)
Connection: Voicestream ISDN
Phone: 19132440821

Details...
Connection type: PPP
Idle timeout: 3 Minutes
(not checked) Query DNS
Primary DNS: 65.161.188.100
Secondary DNS: (none)
IP Address: Automatic

Hope that helps everyone out there.

Regards

Finally, it is working for me also. I have been trying to get the settings right to access the voicestream ISP for months! I don't know if it was the &W in the modem init string (the only thing different from my previous attempts) but I can connect on the first try with no problem.

Maybe someone can suggest how to fix dialing into Mindspring ISP(Earthlink). I have been having a problem for the last month trying to connect to Mindspring. I have three numbers that I can use to dial-in to Mindspring. About half the time the Visorphone will dial, try to establish connection (fast blinking light indicating that the modem is connected to Mindspring), timeout, retry, and either immediately give me the error message that no carrier could be find, or try once again to connect and then error message about no carrier. Repeated dialing eventually get me connected. On some days the failure rate can approach 90%. I have called Mindspring and Voicestream to troubleshoot with no success. I have been also experimenting with the modem init string, AT&FX4, with no consistent improvement. Does anyone have an alternative modem init string that works when dialing into an ISP, maybe something that can force the handshaking process along.

Thanks for any help.

Alright. I've gotten this all working with my VisorPhone. Can surf, but cannot access my e-mail either by web page or by One-touch mail version 2.1. What am I missing? Have attbi broadband.

TIA

I used to access Yahoo mail by AvantGo--that stopped working. I can do it easily by Blazer. I have done no other type of mail access.

BTW, I understand Verizon is advertising a similar service --and making it an explicit benefit. It appears that the communications companies have figured out that this is an enticement.

MarkSquires,

I've had partial success! I was able to get my e-mail using the Eudora Web Mail client. Couldn't get it to send, but I figure I just need to monkey with the security settings. Never could get Blazer to connect to the web based e-mail. It just kept flashing a security icon, but never showed anything. Same with Eudora Web. Blazer is sweet, though.

I have found that I often get bumped off and occassionally get the unable to establish connection messge, but if I try later, it will work fine.

I have also found a strange charge for "premium service" on my VoiceStream account. Going to call and ask about that tomorrow.

Be peristent. VS customer service is awful. I have been frequently told you had to take "data" extra package to surf--this is not true. That's just a way to get extra minutes.

Be careful if you have the VS $49.99 plan! I am in the process of working out some problems I have with using the ISDN dial-up on this plan. VS is trying to stick me with a $240 bill! They say that even though the dial-up number is a VS number, it's outside my area of coverage, and thus I am to pay all long distance charges. However, I called VS a few weeks prior and was informed that Treo users shouldn't be able to dial the iStream number found on this board. Yet the agent informed me that I could try if I would like, though I wouldn't have any luck. I was also informed that being a VS customer allowed me to dial this number without additional cost. Well, I am holding VS to this verbal agreement. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem? If so, are their any VS dial-up number in/near Utah? Thanks!

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but you will not be able to send mail through the VS ISDN connection. Nobody has ever revealed a SMTP server on that line. You could I suppose use a public SMTP server, but then your mail would probably be quarantined on most servers that you send to.
I have a separate dialup connection that I use just for when I have to send mail, and keep my SMTP set to that server.

Lightbulb I get mail just fine on that line!

You use the same servers you would as if you were at home. So for Earthlink for example:

smtp.earthlink.net
pop.earthlink.net

works fine for me. I also get my corporate e-mail (TRW) over the same connection.

Re: that 240 dollar bill: I have a $39.99 VS plan that includes
(1) free roaming across the USA
(2) free long distance

It is impossible for me to dial their number and have it be charged. Or, for that matter, it is impossible for me to be charged for any number in the USA as long as I don't exceed my allowed minutes.

I was responding to a question about sending mail. Are you saying that you can send mail through your earthlink account when dialed into the VS ISDN line? I guess your email program is doing SMTP verification.

Free ISDN still works!

I'm in Atlanta, I have a brand new Prism and Visorphone. I use Voicestream and am using the Voicestream ISDN connection for free Internet access from my VP. I have Palm OS 3.5.2H1.5 and Blazer v2.0. I had to get "data" turned on on my VoiceStream account to get this to work. There are no extra VoiceStream charges - it just takes regular minutes and long distance to use. (I'm on the $49.99 for 3000 Anytime minutes Plan, which only includes roaming and long distance for the southeast states.) Good luck, here's how I did it:

Network Settings:
Service: Voicestream
User Name: <one space>
Password: Assigned to <one space>
Connection: Voicestream ISDN
Phone: 19132440821
Connection Type: PPP
Idle Timeout: 3 minutes
Query DNS: unchecked
Primary DNS: 65.161.188.100
Secondary DNS: blank
IP Address Automatic: checkmark
Script: End

I created a new connection called Voicestream ISDN:
Conn Meth: Serial to Modem
Dialing: Touch Tone
Volume: Off
Speed: 57600
Flow Ctrl: Automatic
Country: Other
Init String: AT&FX4;+cbst=71,0,1

By the way, I would like to get my Earthlink dial up connection working, but I'm not having much luck. If you can contribute any suggestions, please see my post in the Communications forum called: "Anyone connecting to Earthlink with Visorphone?"

how do you enter the <one space> in user id and password? i type a space in both places and occassionally i get "authentication failed". i then retype in the space - i also typed in ' ' and that seems to be working. any help would be most appreciated.

PS. is blazer worth the $20? i am looking to see if that other browser is really more useful...

The <one space> is entered using a single left->right stroke, as though you were putting a space between two words. Occasionally the auth. failed message is a result of network problems on VS's end.

Regarding Blazer -- if you have the VisorPhone, you don't have to pay for the new version of Blazer, you can download it for free.

the only time i ever got a modem not found was when i pulled off the Vphone with out turning it off. it's been working well, somewhat quirky but fairly reliable. the only problem i've had is when it refuses to turn on, in which case i pull it off and reinsert it and everything's ok again...
