Handspring modem question

I have had a Handspring modem for a few months now but have consistently been having the same problem. I insert the module, and try to connect to my isp. A dialog box pops up saying that it is initiallizing and then dialing, but then my Visor hangs. (The modem does not make the funny noises it makes while connecting while the dialog box is up.) I have to perform a soft reset, but then if I repeat the procedure the modem immediately dials and connects correctly.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.
