caution....i am a computer idiot.

i tried to read the other messages about paying sprint for wireless internet but i couldnt understand what she was asking.

my new found quest is to be able to view the internet "wirelessly" on my visor just like i am now at home on my big old desktop where i can type in any website and go to it. (some how using my phone like gene hackman did in "enemy of the state") is that really possible?

i just found on thesupplynet.com that they have a cable to hook my visor to my samsung 6100.

what good will this cord do me? is this how i can get on the internet from my visor?

what kind of internet is it anyway? i had the sprint wireless web plan for a while, but i cancelled it, that was so limited. Am i going to get the same kind of limited web sites like on the pcs wireless web?

assuming i can get full web coverage how do i get it anyway? can i sign on through my aol account? can i use avantgo? do i have to pay anyone (sprint)anything extra? help? please? hey i told you i was a computer idiot?


any advice, other threads, web sites, anything!! will be grately appreaciated!!!!!

That cable you saw will link your phone to your visor to give you full-blown internet access. There may be some sites you won't be able to access but I would say over 90% of them will be ok. However, since you will be using AOL, you have a problem. The AOL software you would install on your visor won't allow to surf the web, only send instant messages and read/send email. If you want regular internet access like what you have on your desktop on your visor, you will have to sign up with a differnt ISP such as earthlink, mindspring, verizon, etc. as they are "normal" ISPs that just use dialup numbers (AOL requires you to use their special software). Finally, you may or may not have to pay an extra small fee to Sprint to enable data access for your phone (again, this may or may not be necessary, check with sprint). BTW, once the visor is logged onto to the net via your mobile phone, you can use Avantgo, Blazer, Palmscape, or any other web browser you choose.

Almost but not quite correct

If Sprint is the cell provider, someone with AOL can use QNC(quick network connect) for regular web browsing and just connect to AOL when they want to check email, yes it is a hassle to have to connect for web then reconnect for email but it can be done. Plus, if Sprint is the cell provider, you will need to pay $10/mth for wireless web access as this is how you enable data access for the phone.

mmendo1--- you said once i connect to the internet i can use avantgo. Can i sign on with avantgo and replace using aol(or a "normal" isp) or do i use avantgo after i sign on through the isp?

nysebull--- where can i get QNC? ive never heard of it before.

Colby,

You can't use Avantgo as an ISP. Think of Avantgo as a web browser, like Internet Explorer or Netscape. You need someone to provide service to the internet (your ISP) and then you use a web browser to view the content, which is where Avantgo comes in.

As the post you quoted states, you will have to pay Sprint the extra charge to enable data access. This means you are paying Sprint to >>ALLOW<< data to be sent to and from your phone. Once you pay that fee, it is up to you to provide the ISP for your phone/visor, such as the one from your employer. So if you didn't have your free ISP from your employer, you would have to pay an additional fee to an ISP such as Mindspring, Earthlink, etc. Finally, as the first post states, a cable to connect your phone to the visor can be found at www.thesupplynet.com.

For creole, to clarify

The only thing QNC won't let you do is send email, it has no smtp server.

aw man...that kind of sucks.

What method would you recommend using to be able to send mail through the Visor/Samsung combo?

My ISP provides web-based email. Would that be an option? I don't know what I can realistically expect as far as display on the Visor (for webpages I mean)

I think yahoo now offers free pop accesses, so that
you can use any mail program you want.
