Anti-scrach discovery!

I had to make a few scratches on my first VDX before I realized I need some kind of protection. I tried home-made film, writerights and other stuff... But then I read somewhere about using vegetable oil on visor screen. So I tried it, and IT WORKED!!

You probably noticed that the most common reason for scratches is the stylus itself, or to be more accurate the dust that gets between stylus and screen. Well, a bit of oil on the screen eliminates this problem. So, unless you visor is exposed to some extreme conditions, this is the most economical and effective way to protect your screen from scratches. Just apply a bit of oil and wipe the screen with a paper towel.

And then place it the Microwave (Oven for crispy) for a coyple minutes and Mmmmm... delicious Visor.

Cleaning screen

The absolutely best and safest product for cleaning my Visor's screen is Klear Screen. Try it; you'll like it.

Seems to me that having a bit of vegetable oil on your screen would attract more dust. If that's the case, wouldn't that cause more scratches rather than prevent them?

Somewhere here I read about using a dab of Rain-X windshield treatment on the screen- put a drop on the screen, rub it in and around well, let dry, then polish off.

I have been doing this now for a couple months and it works GREAT for me! The stylus glides like magic. I use plain vinyl for a protector, and do the Rain-X bit on the naked screen, and on the vinyl. I also polish my stylus tips, and Rain-X them as well!

Rain-X does not leave a damp residue, so does not attract dust- in fact, I rarely ever see dust on the screen, so it may actually repel it a bit.

Yup vegetable oil works, in making the stylus glide smoothly. So it can prevent scratches. A bit late now.. I already have a few long scratches (minor but noticeble sometims), due to dragging the stylus downwards when reading AvantGo pages.

I still believe in the need for screen protectors. A recent bump in the bus, caused a small deep scratch. I was just wondering though, why they couldn't have a more scratch resistant surface for Visors? Is it too expensive?

What I use for an Anti-Scratch solution is Brillianize. It's made for polishing plastics and making them feel super smooth. It can be found at TAP plastics.

Kinda along the same lines as you guys, I use Silicon Spray on my screen protectors. Just on the graffitti area. It eliminates the scratches on the protector and gives them everlasting life! I would never rely on just these solutions personally without a screen protector of some sort, these solutions do, however, make them last a whole lot longer so you buy a whole lot less.

The silicon makes the writing area very slick.... Maybe for some people too slick. Just FYI I also put this stuff on the feet of my mouse to make it glide nicer too.

I use nothing

Actually I'm happy about it The Prism's screen, is slick, and for me it's has been scratch free. I do wash it clean every once in awhile, but otherwise it's all clear. Now for the Vdx's.. that's another story

Never used a screen protector. Never had a visor long enough to collect scratches. To clean the screen I breathe on it and wipe it off with my shirt.

Any vegetable oil will do

But it's a really really really small amount which you wipe out afterwards. So an oily finger is more than enough to cover the screen. Then wipe it off some more with a cloth until you can't see the oil anymore. It's actually still there if you try using the stylus (slippery, so perfect for dragging pages like AvantGo). I haven't had any problems with it attracting dust any more than usual. Dust isn't a worry, it's grit that's worrying due to a lot of construction going on in my city.

I still keep a strip of WriteRight though for the grafitti area. I use it so much, that scratches are inevitable.

Nope.. it does about as much harm as you having an oily screen You can wipe it all off if you want. Does no harm whatsoever to the screen.

I wax mine. So far I've tried liquid Turtle Wax and Lemon Pledge. Both make grafitti easier and greatly improved general stylus use by dramatically lowering stylus grab on the screen.

Pledge gives it that squeaky-clean lemony smell too
