Thumbs up

Just wanted to let everyone know that I hacked a serial cradle up and created a serial cable out of it, using the ATL Connectors and a little soldering.

I use the Handspring Visor to control my MP3 Jukebox in my car, a 233Mhz PC with 33 Gigs of MP3s with IR Remote, PalmAmp control, CDPD Modem, etc.. check it out at http://www.mobileJukeBox.com for more info and great detailed pics on the visor serial cradle

whoah, how'd you get the visor to interface with the box? I'd be interested in knowing how you did that. I've wanted to turn my visor into a portable display that i can hook up to a terminal without a monitor. Just for quick diagnostics, can you share some pointers for doing this?

I used PALMAMP to control the Winamp part, this allows playlist control, volume, shuffle, etc. You can find a copy of PalmAmp and the .DLL needed at Winamp.com or at tucows PDA section

I am currently working on getting the Visor to remotely control the PC so I can ditch the Keyboard and mouse. I am focusing on This info here http://members1.chello.nl/~rvdoever/palmpilot/pppdcc/ for getting IP/Web and Mail on the visor, and I am also trying to get PALMVNC working.

PalmVNC is a great palm utility to remotely control a Windows or Linux PC from a Palmpilot. My intention is to have the Visor connect and control the PC via the serial cable/crade, possibly with a Null modem adapter.

PalmVNC for PC/Linux is here http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/~minenko/PalmVNC

Here is the VNC Server/Client for WIndows/Linux http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

THis is a great/Free alternative to PCAnywhere, and if I get this working on the Visor, I'll be pumped. Any info anyone has on this, please post it!

Good luck

wow, that's what i'm looking for. keep me posted if you get it working, I'm gonna attempt this in a few weeks. I want to turn an old pentium computer into a mp3 jukebox for my house, just a standalone type thing. but i want to control it via the visor, and not a separate keyboard/mouse/display.

Talking

This is REALLY cool! Now i have another weekend(s) project!

This may be a bit off topic, but I was wondering if you had any problems with the hard drives crashing due to road vibrations/potholes.

Have you had any problems? Did you pad the machine in the trunk at all?

I've never had any problems at all with the Vibration. I have beat the %#@! out of the case when I was building, and never had a skip, crash, etc. It has not been a problem at all, and I live in New Hampshire, with some serious potholes, Dirt Roads and Snow.

I do take the Jukebox out of the car in December thru February, since the Hard Disk may not like the new england winters. I then use the IR Remote for control in the living room. I need to spray paint the case black sometime soon so I can fit it in a little better with the other stereo components.

When I get new MP3's off the net, and create new ones, I manage the Playlist and songs via the HomePNA network, using ordinary phone lines, and thats awesome - more info at http://www.homepna.com

Good luck, and dont have too much fun building!
