Hi, I was late for school today. So, I wasn't careful when trying to put my visor deluxe into my pocket. To my surprise, my visor dropped on the floor. And the result is shown in the attached photo.

A CRACK SCREEN!!!! I don't feel any cracks on the touch screen thing, but there's a big crack crossing the find and calculator button beneath the plastic. I can still sync, but the touch screen fails.

What should I do? Can I replace the LCD screen myself?

Lightbulb Well...

When did you purchase your visor?

My screen cracked as well, but I only had it a month and Handspring Customer Support RMA'd me a new unit overnight. It even works better than my old one did.

Do you think HandSpring will have some trade-in program in which I can exchange my Visor Deluxe with a Prism?

I REALLY don't want to pay $80 USD for a screen!!!

Exclamation i didn't have to pay $80

my screen broke a while ago. the first time i called, i just told them that the screen broke and they told me it would cost $80, and i told them that i would think about it and i hung up. the next time i called i told them that my screen broke and that my case was cracking in the back and they said that they would replace it for free. maybe if you say the case is cracking they will replace it for free.

So what you are saying is I need to CRACK my case before calling? I think they will check whether my case and screen are broken before sending me a new one.

Another thing: Did you drop your Visor? How come your screen cracks?

Thanks for the tip!

Arrow Hole

Another hole to be plugged by Handspring. I am sure they are taking in all the tricks of the trade on this board.

Unhappy

I was hoping that HandSpring has some kind of trade-in program so I can get a Prism.

Oh well, I guess I have to pay $80 more for my Visor DX.

If it's any consolation, the $85 I paid for my replacement after my screen cracked turned out to be a good investment. I had developed some contrast and synching problems on my original unit, probably from experimenting with lots of different apps and hacks. The replacement unit didn't have any of these problems. I understand that Handspring is working on these units all the time to improve them, so hopefully your new unit will have some improvements.

Now, I had a similar experience with my visor, except that my screen was cracked much, much worse.

When I was in one of my classes and running late, my Visor fell out of the cheap supplied case and hit the ground. I saw $85 flash before my eyes. I quickly picked it up and put it in the case. Hoping that nothing happened to it I slowly took it out of the case and what I saw gave my stomach a one-way ticket to my throat. The ENTIRE screen was cracked. I had crack after crack on my screen, most of them spanning the entire screen, from top to bottom. At least nobody saw it because my Visor is more popular than myself.

So what did I do? I asked if they knew if and how to get a handheld screen repair. I was assuming that this sort of thing happens all the time, and if Handspring did not offer support for cracked Visor screens, then they would be out of business by now.

At lunch, there is this handheld "club" going. One friend has a Palm V, another a Visor, another a Cassiopeia, and myself (who obviously has a Visor). I received a lot of garbage from the people in this club, but I was laughing with them at the end of the day. I tried to explain to them that it was more like a freak accident than anything else. Normally I put the hard case in the soft case. This caused the elastic on the soft case to stretch out and my Visor to easily slide out without the hard case on. Not a good thing. I would not recommend doing this with your Visor, or anyone for that matter.

Anyway, I went home and called up Handspring, got a VM type message (If you would like this, press 1) and shortly after got a friendly representative who said that having butterfingers is not covered under the warranty, and had to pay up. After giving a credit card number, they sent out the RMA. In this process, they send out a brand new unit (which turned out to be better than the old one) and I ship the old one back with the required paperwork conveniently supplied in the box. The request was sent in on Friday and I got a new Visor on Monday (yesterday).

Looking back on the experience, I have to say that I have to be a lot more careful. Even though they charge a high price of 85 dollars, you do receive fast delivery from Handspring, and easy shipment to Handspring.
If you want to get the repair thourgh Handspring, they have a list of numbers at their website (handspring.com)

Still, I'm going to be getting a new case.

I am careful with my visor than with my other stuff, such as my Rio 500. that's why it didn't break after 2 1/2 months I purchased it. I am a butterfinger guy. That's why i don't like to carry a lot of stuff, except for my cellphone and wallet and key. My rio 500 dropped a million times and it didn't break. But Rio isn't an important to my life. Visor is. Unforunately, it slipped out of my hand and dropped about 3 feet and smashed right on a concrete floor.

The case didn't crack. So, I guess I have to pay $85 for a new visor.

moderator..do not delete anything below. This expresses my feeling at this moment.

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For $85, I can get two PS2 games and lots of fries.

Do it yourself and save the bucks, Gethigtech has the screens for 45 bucks and it not hard to do. Thats only one playstation game.

Or if you've got no ethics, and you have a friend with the same color one, hard reset your and swap it with his. Then he'll think he somehow broke it and it lost all his info.

I couldn't have thought of this one

I will call HandSpring for a RMA number because I am not a guy who can fix things...even though I play engineer everytime in HalfLife Team Fortress.

Thanks for all your help. My $85 is flying out of my wallet.

The same thing happened to me. Visor will replace your unit for a $93 charge. Very quick and friendly service. they send you a new unit and you return your broken one within 15 days. Call their service number for a return code.

With the 3rd party screen fix- that might not be good because it will void your warranty. if another problem comes up, you won't be able to return it.

Has anyone actually purchased screens from here before? I might be needing a new screen for my VDX.

Although it's kind of strange -- last night I was using it and didn't notice any problems. This morning when I get up I take a look -- and there is a large (1.5") crack on the top right corner of the screen. The last time I dropped it was a few days ago and I didn't notice any problems with the screen then...
