Treo available Jan 14th

According to a very positive review in today's NY Times, the Treo will be available on Jan 14th.

Hey! Shouldn't LouisW get credit for spotting this one?

Anybody have any idea what the upgrade offer for current VisorPhone owners is going to be?

I hope it will be somehting more than just letting us buy the Treo w/o activation, at the w/ activation price.

But then, people have paid anywhere from $0 to $300. for the module, so it would be hard to come up with a one-size-fits-all offer.

A $100. trade in (for Visor & phone) wouldn't be too bad. Or am I dreaming?

I think you're probably dreaming.

I'm betting that will be it exactly, but that you will be able to continue on with your current one-year agreement...

Do you honestly think Handspring and their cellular partners are going to go along with that idea? I doubt it.

Well... if HS feels the need to make good with all the vphone users, than I expect that they'll eat the add'l cost and leave the cellular partners out of it completely. They'll take a 150 dollar hit off the full purchase price (somewhere near their own cost, perhaps), and get the vphone returned (maybe?) so they could theoretically sell it again as a refurb.

The deal isn't that sweet, I don't think it would affect their bottom line...

..The difficult part is determining how much a person paid for their vphone---they ought not get the discount when they paid 50 bucks (or nothing) for it...

...now I'm talking myself out of my little conjecture...

sigh...

dunno.

On the one hand, the fact that Handspring just changed their front page to reflect the dropped Pro price seems to indicate that maybe the 14th is a bit optimistic. Would they really leave the price drop up on the front for just two days--and weekend days at that? I suppose that maybe they're embarrased that they have to drop the price so quickly... I dunno.. I'm not so hopeful for Monday.

On the other hand, though, is the fact that their newsletter contest has been switched to a Visor Edge instead of the autographed Treo. This would imply that they've drawn the winners of said treos will have been notified and perhaps told that their treos are on the way... or perhaps they know the real release date.

waiting....
