Non-Treo Smartphone for Verizon

A buddy of mine is looking for a smartphone, hopefully in the $300 range, that will work on the Verizon network. Any recommendations? Leaning more towards Palm-based than Pocket PC, but is open to suggestions.
The Kyocera 7135 looks good, but its closer to $500.
