Question What type of memory back-up to use?

Hi -- just purchased a Prism. Now I know I should not have done so thanks to Handspring's about-face on the product. But it's too late. So... given that, I don't want to invest a lot on accessories, I'm wondering what ONE type of memory back-up will be best to purchase.

I'm ignorant about this whole area. I don't even understand the difference between a back-up module and a flash back-up. HELP please. I'd like 8 to 16 MB back-up. It would be nice to be able to delete and add things back and forth to the back-up too...

Oh -- while I'm here, I'll ask. Thanks to Franklin Covey software I now have THREE scheduling programs in my Prism. Obviously that's not needed. Is there any way I can get rid of the Prism datebooks? Actually, I'm trying to decide between the Covey datebook (called Appt/Scheduler) and the DatebookPlus that's in the Prism. But once I decide that -- I only need ONE. And then there's still that regular Datebook program in the system that I know I won't use. Since these programs will all record the same appointments, it seems as if they will use a lot of memory once I get going. So any info. on deleting would be helpful...

Thanks!!

hey...

hey good luck with your new Prism.

easiest way, and the cheapest way to backup these days is a handspring Backup module. New they go for 40 bucks but i just sold my used for around 15 which is a great deal.
Look around on ebay and/or the VC messageboards...people buy memplugs (like me) and get rid of their backup mods. so your in luck.

Sorry dunno about getting rid of the datebook program ,i dont think its possible seeing as its in ROM not RAM...but you could change the datebook hard button to launch any other program you would like, to make it easier. Just go to Prefrences and then to Buttons. have a great day.

Personally, I prefer the HandSpring Backup Module. You simply insert it into the SpringBoard Slot, hit Backup, and away it goes. Should you have to perform a HardReset, you simply insert the Module and hit Restore. Everything will be restored to the identical state of your last backup.

If you want the capability to backup to a module, and have additional room for applications and databases, I would recommend the MemPlug. It is a great product and they super support. With their software and a little tweaking, you can go a long way. Check them out at their site .

If I were you I would consider the CompactFlash version or the SmartMedia Version, unless you have some spare MemorySticks or SD Cards around.

As for the DateBook and DateBook+, they are both installed in ROM. They cannot be removed from the handheld, but in the same token they are not taking up your 8MB of RAM.

DateBook+ is an enhanced version of the regular DateBook program. The reason that DateBook is included is because DB+ does not allow you to BEAM, so must use DateBook for that. DateBook+ is a slightly modified version of DateBook3, available from Pimlico Software .

Enjoy your Prism, I loved mine while I had it and I am sure you will like yours.

Thanks!

Thank you to Drakion and GSR13 for the information. I now know how to program my button and I think I will get one of the MemPlugs. Appreciate the info.

One more ignorant question. If the datebooks on the Prism are in ROM I can see how they don't use the RAM. However, if any data is entered into one of the datebooks and then is also synched automatically to the other -- won't THAT use up more RAM? Or do I only use the RAM if I access one particular datebook?

Datebook and Datebook+ read and write to the same data file(Similarly, DateBook3, DatebBook4, and alot of similar products also use the DateBook database). While you have two programs, the data only exists in one file that they share. If you enter an appointment in Datebook and then open Datebook+, you will see the appointment.
