Question Buy a ThinModem?

I just saw at Staples they're selling the Handspring ThinModem for $20 shipped. It's the older one, but it can be upgraded to 56k

It's only $20, but that's still a small investment for me, a high school student who just got his sony clie stolen. I've gotten my new visor edge replacement, after many efforts and help! You guys think it'll be worth buying?

I don't travel very much, and I do use AOL, so I dunno about getting it to work and all...I was thinking to use it to lazily update avantgo, haha, and lazily sit and bed before I go to sleep on AIM or something...and when I do travel, $20 is a great price for adding on internet capability.

I don't know much about using a PalmOS device with a modem, so maybe you guys can tell me all the cool things I can do with it! Especially those of you who use the AOL software for it...Thanks!

Unhappy $20?? where?

I just went to Staples.com, which I was assuming you were referring to (since you mentioned shipping), and don't see the Thinmodem listed for $20... I want one, so if you can tell me where to find this, I'd appreciate it.

Hi, I found the deal on a deal site actually. Basically, it's the ThinModem, which is actually by Card Access, and if you go to Staples.com, and search for "Handspring ThinModem" it should bring it up. It costs $49.99. There's a $30 rebate coupon right now by CardAccess, expires 1/31/2002. Then, if you tip the scale over $50, you can get free shipping. Add some paperclips for 17 cents, then you can get the modem for basically $50.16 - $30, when you get it, which is $20.16.

For the rebate form: http://www.cardaccess-inc.com/rebate3.pdf

For the 56k update, it's the older 33.6k one, but you can make it 56k! : http://www.cardaccess-inc.com/upgrade_21a.html

I'm still debating to get it or not...and what kinda stuff you can do with one. I hope this helps you!

me again!

Just wanted to let you know, Staples.com says they're out of the modems.. I went to order just moments after you posted (had just checked 10 minutes previous, and they still had some)... I called the 800# and ordered that way.. in my opinion, for someone that wants a cheap way to get online with their handheld, there's no question ....this is it. Mine's on it's way!

This is a nice modem, but I have heard that you cannot FAX from it. Just something to be aware of this if you need that function.

Faxing won't really matter to me, I don't even fax with a regular fax machine, I still don't know what I'd use it for...

I also can't get 56k out of it, even after the update, the most I can get is 19.2, on the same line I use with my desktop that I get 46.6 most of the time. Still a decent little modem, though. Be careful of AOL IM, I ended up deleting it - it caused A LOT of problems (backup or hotsync before you use it is my recommendation)

That's not good...I'll see. What'd your setup? Visor Edge right? That's what I've got...
Argh, AIM was like the main thing I wanted to use on it! I'll see...What kind of problems? Crashes?

Prism, I get fatel exceptions while AOL is running, then switching to other apps. Sometimes, it would just hang up. It might be able to be used solo, but after 3 hard resets while out of town - I bought a backup module and deleted AOL and havn't had a problem.

in terms of the rebate on the rebate form itself it's stated as a 56k modem while on the websites of compusa and staples it's listed as a 33.6k. I'm a newbie to all this stuff so u'll have to excuse me if i'm unware of certain things, but this is all the same thinmodem that we're talkin' about right? excludin' the thinmodem plus ofc ourse, but card-access only has one regular thinmodem right? I don't want to buy the 33.6 only to find out that the rebate is only for the 56k, thus leavin' me 30$ in the hole........

They say 56k because it CAN be 56k. You have to install the firmware update. As for as I know, CardAccess has two models. ThinModem, and ThinModem Plus. This is a ThinModem, it should be no problem at all.

cool i'm gonna go pick me one up @ either compusa, staples or bestbuy...they're all near house hehehe. no need to wait for all that mail order hassles........ oh by the way with a visor deluxe runing 3.1 OS connected to the internet through the thinmodem would i be able to run the blazer software? (2.0 supposedly requires OS 3.5+) would 1.1 blazer be more stable?

I don't think you can get the ThinModem at those places for $50. For around double that price I believe. So...if you don't be patient, you'll end up paying about $80 extra... Up to you...

Question Which Staples in Raleigh?

Dampeoples,

Is that the Staples on Six Forks and Wake Forest?

Not that it matters... unless I get there before anyone else...

It HAS to be $20, can't get it cheaper. You gotta spend $50 to get free shipping. Then the $30 rebate brings it down to $20 Can't get it cheaper...

Wink

here is what i did.... i went to office depot to pick up a usb cradle for 8.99, then i went to compusa to return this item(said it was a gift) got 32.00 worth of credit. so i went and bought the thinmodem and paid another 20$. so far i'm shellin' out only 30$ and now here comes the MIR of 30$ which would bring my cost down to 0$ pick up on the spot! but unfortunately not all fairy tales come with a happy ending. i would be able to log onto aim. and it disconnects like right away. i couldnt' sync up with any of the other software so i returned this and picked up the xircom 56k. it works great and absolutely no beef so far. oh well such is life. but i still only shelled out 30$ for the xircom........
