Care to lay down odds on my next PDA? I'm not sure myself at this point, but I think that I've nixed the idea of a Neo with a Dave Design case as an option.

If you're seriously thinking about an M505, you should look at the Clie 610 - 50 bucks less and color is twice as good as the M505.

My wife uses our Prism, and I use the Sony (we both upgraded from the VDX).

One of the reasons I bought the Sony instead of another Prism is that I wanted the Memory Stick technology, since my digital Camera already uses it.

If you're anything like us, once you have color, you'll never look back.

Just my .02

Cheers

Actually, that's the only greyscale on the radar at the moment. If they released a color model by Christmas, there'd be no one else on the radar. As it is, though, I'm weighing the factors (expandibility and longevity potential are serious considerations) of various color PDAs. I'm not even ruling out PPCs yet (although their cost and interface scores are low AFAIC).

I agree w/Dick. Very poor battery life and the incessant flicker at 1/3-1/4 brightness of the Prism drove me nuts. I would have kept the IIIc I had if memory wasn't an issue. It's not sexy but it had a wonderful screen and twice the battery life of the Prism.

Now I do love my HandEra 330! :-)

I'm pleased, for the most part. It's slightly girthier than the m500, and the the backlight utility doesn't activate the backlight until after getting past security. Ignorig the fact that it, at least, is supported by its manufacturing company: battery life is good, I'm loving the backlit graffiti area, hardball is in color, etc. All in all, I am well pleased and will be keeping it for the foreseeable future (at least a week).

I would say that if color were my only consideration, I would choose the prism over the m505. Since it's not even on my list of top 5, it's all good.

Hey dick Thanks for the input...i do like the size of the M505, and the fact the company that made it isnt saying it was a mistake...

So what the battery life like? Cause i woulndt be able to stand the prism..only 6 hours striaght??? i coulndt take it.. i use my Edge way to much..,

I dont know what to do... I am scared...Someone please hold me..

I love my Edge, but its time to upgrade...I woud love to stay with Handspring butt they only have one color brick, and i get this feeling that they have nothing in the works besides the nonexpandable Treo.

I am also worried about palm too...they still havent got thier stuff together.

Now sony with there coming out with a Clie every weeek, 320, 415, 610, 710, 760...man i think they wil run out of numbers by 2002!!

i guess if i have been holding out this long too get color...i might as well wait a little longer. Or jump on the Clie 760 when its on sale..

My life is so complicated

I haven't worried about it enough to know for sure. Fairly good, slightly less than the edge or m500.

Did you have any issues with syncing your information/programs over to the new one? Considering that the lastest version of Handspring's desktop software installs in "C:\Program Files\Handspring", I'm curious as to how another PalmOS device would react (since I'd obviously want to just have my old information written to the new handheld) since Handspring uses a 3.x Hotsync manager instead of a 4.x.

None. Palm swears up and down that I could've just put the m500 in, hotsynced, and all woud've been well. I didn't try it. I did the same thing I always do when changing devices:
  • Set aside everything in my backup folder - in case the next step doesn't work.
  • Set backupall to save everything and, if successful, delete the crap from step one
  • Move everything from the backup folder to an undisclosed location.
  • If I'm feeling adventurous, move the information from the various PIM apps, remove Palm Desktop, and re-install with latest version from whichever company I happened to buy from. I don't bother very often, but did with the m505 to see if I could get avantgo working.
  • Sync the new device to only get the datebook/addressbook/todo list/memopad info installed.
  • Go through the backed-up information and install everything I want. If I'm not feeling adventurous, I'll also install some of the former system's preferences.

It's a lot easier/quicker than it sounds. It honestly takes about 5 minutes.

I'm back into the m500. The 505 just wasn't it for me.

Same question. I thought they might have fixed the screen issues by now, but if they haven't, then the Sony 610 might have edged up in my considerations.

Well, in my understanding, the screen issues have been resolved, which means only that they all have the same level of quality... which is still not good enough for some...

Partly. The screen looked wonderful with the backlight on constantly, but I'm not willing to take that hit WRT battery life. Also, I wasn't interested in paying $70 for the features it boasts. I'd rather get more RAM.

Of course, you have to remember that I live in the middle of nowhere. Palm's "fixed" units may not be here. I'd bet that the local OfficeMax is still selling the first or second order units.

Toby, if it's between the 505 and the 610, I'd advocate the 610. If you're looking for a replacement for your edge, you can't beat the m500. This is obviously my own opinion (just thought I'd throw that out there for the benefit of those who can't form their own).

To which features (other than color) are you referring?

Yes, I'm looking for a replacement for my Edge, but I'm also looking for something that I can use for several years (which is why I'm looking elsewhere than Handspring). Also, considering that to get the durability I was looking for case-wise, I'd have been spending $450 ($200 for a Neo and $250 for a Dave Design case), I figured that I'd use that as a guideline for deciding. This means that I'm considering color as well as size, durability, etc. Upgradeability is also a concern. I'm pretty fed up with Handspring's attitude WRT upgrades.

Backlit graffiti - which was as much a consideration as the color screen. Changing the contrast on the 500 in the dark is a pain in teh ass.

To be honest, I'm hoping to use my 500 for a couple of years (there's another sure bet for you, dietrichbohn). It's multimedia features leave something to be desired, but that isn't going to be a major consideration for me unless I'm missing out on something functionally practical because of it. I have no idea where the market is moving (i.e. towared multimedia - a la clie, or wireless - a la treo), so I'm not going to commit money to either at this point.

IOW, whether you use it for several years or not is largely dependant on you.

How big is that hit? I haven't really been able to find a straight answer on just how long the battery life is with the backlight always on...

If I had my druthers, my prism and stowaway kb would be a m505 and stowaway right now.

Same as prism at moderate brightness, give or take.
