Handspring Backup Module

My Visor Deluxe crashes all the time, especially when the battery power starts getting low, so I have a Backup Module to restore everything after a hard reset. The problem is I don't carry the module with me all the time, which means the restore is not always with the most updated data.

I plan to leave the module plugged in all the time so I can backup the machine as soon as I have new data on board. Will it consume more power just by being plugged in all the time? I know of course when I run backup or restore, it will require battery power. I want to know the effects of having it simply plugged in on power consumption.

Battery consumption should be minimal and shouldn't be a problem. One thing I would consider though, is that if your VDX gets lost or stolen while the backup module is in it, you will lose the backup also. Something to keep in mind.

Losing your VDX with the back-up module inside would definitely be the pits.

I used to leave mine in it all the time, and there was a noticeable (although not huge) increase in battery life when I stopped doing so.

For what it is worth, I also need my backup with me at all times. Have way too much scheduling, phone numbers, to do items etc to not have it available because my visor crashed.

I glued a small ring on top of the backup module, and then have it hanging from my neck (under my shirt). That way, I always have it available, but not at risk of losing the data if I lose my visor.
I could just go buy a new visor(hmm ) and do a restore to recover the data.

Just a thought.

miradu - Yup I guess I gotta admit it - I am definitely a GEEK - still don't wear the pocket protectors tho!

By the way, could you call this a 'backup on a rope' ?

Regardless of being a GEEK, have become so dependent on the information, that couldn't efficiently function at work without the info. That is how great the visor really is!

Sound advice. In that case I would keep another not-so-frequent backup somewhere else.

Actually, having two backup modules has been suggested in a previous thread and (I seem to recall) has proven to be beneficial. I only have one, but I try to back it up every morning and put it back in my desk drawer. If I am going to be out of the office for a few days, I carry it with me but not in my Visor. (And I wouldn't take it to Camp, band or otherwise!!)

I'm one of those 2 Backup Module folks... I keep one at home and one in my briefcase and alternate daily which one I backup to. I'll break this routine and do a backup prior to installing any software just to be on the safe side.

I use OnlyMe for security and it seems to do a pretty good job of protecting the handheld and modules in case anything gets lost or stolen.

One of the negatives of the Backup Module is that it's an "all or nothing" backup and not really too useful if you want to recover that DiddleBug note you made yesterday and hastily deleted. Having 2 modules gives you some ability to work around this. I actually have access to a third module and another handheld (my son's) so I'll back up his to his module and then use his handheld to see if what I'm looking for is on one of my modules... worked reliably the few times I've done it.

Backup Module AND Backup Buddy!

I use both.

The backup module stays in the unit all the time so that If I have a crash, I can recover right there out in the field.

Backup Buddy in case something happens to the backup module.

Best of both worlds.

I guess I can join the 3 backup geek club.

After recieving my MemPlug, I put my backup module "somewhere I could find it" and then I couldn't. I finally found it today, so now I have my primary SM card, a 8MB card with a backup on it, and my backup module. I will keep the 8MB card with me, but away from my Visor, probably my wallet, and the module in my vehicle, since it ussually close by.
