My PP Pro with its 2MB/IR upgrade was tucked away in its 3Com case and had survived many a droppings without incidence. It was a faithfull evening in January that rather than having the belt go through the case, I only had it slipped onto my pant pocket. I was trying to take it off and set it on the dining room table but instead, the whole thing, case and Pilot fell to the ground (made of a very lovely but beginning to be loathable hardwood) and made a worrisome crack noise.
A quick look at it and I noticed the screen wasn't physically damaged but when turning it on, the display flickered and only showed part of what should have been there. Later, I was told that the ribbon cable to the LCD had come apart.
The good folks at 3Com informed me that a refurbed unit would cost $150 Cdn and that I'd be better off buying a new 3e at around $200 Cdn and enjoy the improvements and longer warranty.
Since I've had my eye on the Visor for some time, I thought that'd be the one for me. However Handspring no longer shipped to Canada and it hadn't quite gone retail yet.
And so, I went along without a Palm device as I waited for some word that they'd be readily available in the land of the Great White North. And when I could not bare to wait any longer, I made the two hour drive today, May 13, 2000 down to Buffalo from Toronto where the good folks at CompUSA sourced me and my fiance two units as well as a nifty little Stowaway keyboard.
I got it home and played with it, re-synched all of the information collected in MS Outlook and tried to put some sense of order back into my life. I sat on the couch, which is positioned over the same hardwood flooring as I tried to figure out an easy way of mounting the visor on the keyboard.
Then, only hours after buying my wonderfull new Visor, the unit slipped, the force I used to push the keyboard against the Visor sent it tumbling off the couch and onto the floor. I picked it up and low and behold.... cracks across the screen.
If anyone has gotten this far down the message, would you be able to tell me whether Handspring still replaces cracked screens for free and what sort of fees there will be for shipping to a Canadian address....
May the god or patron saint of PDAs have mercy on me!!!
TIA
Bill
