I finally broke down...

and am using screen protection after noticing some scratches on the graffiti area. I'm doing the scotch tape #811 trick. I wish I'd have tried this sooner. It makes writing a pleasure. Finding #811 was a PITA, though. I tried Wal-Mart, Target, Shopko, and KMart with no luck. Finally found some at OfficeMax and overpaid ($2.96 after tax for a refill - I spent less on the dispenser), but I'm glad I didn't use the green packaged tape - #811 comes off very nicely.

Oh, I forgot to mention I did the vegetable oil trick first. My screen has never been better.

This does raise the question in my mind, is the edge's screen more prone to scratching or am I starting to care a little better for my equipment?

I think it's the stylus. the stylus tip on my wife's edge seems to be a harder material than the regular stylus tip on my Platinum. after she had been using it about a week, some scratches already started appearing in the grafitti area before i got around to slapping some vinyl on her screen.
