Hi,

I'm looking for an alternative to the WriteRight screen protectors. I just don't like how those screen protectors make the screen dim and I can't seem to put the protector on without any bubbles.

In the interim, I have been cutting up a sticky note and placing it over the writing area and that seems to work pretty well. I thought that maybe I could use the same material that those Oil Change companies use to print their 'replace oil at...' stickers that they stick on your windshield. Those stickers stick on the windows without any adhesive which is another issue I have with the WriteRights. Whenever I replace one of those protectors, I can see my screen lift up slightly and I don't thing that that is very good for the screen.

Does anyone have any alternative solutions to screen protectors?

I'd probably go with the Vinyl...

From my research on the same topic, I think I would probably go with the vinyl. I've got WriteRights, and am kinda neutral about them - I don't like how it cuts the screen clarity, but I do like how it cuts the glare, so I keep using them.

If I had to pick an alternative, I'd get vinyl (the stuff the oil change places use).

Nothing's going to be perfect, though. Vinyl is even harder to put on than WriteRights, and you said you were having trouble getting it on without bubbles. Any alternative will either have the bubbles problem, will have adhesive, will glare, or will cut clarity.

I guess it just depends on what you want to live with.

I use the warman screen protectors and am perfectly happy with them. They can be gotten at:

lot's of people hate him because he makes a big stink about having a patent for them.

I hated the blurry writerights, though.

No need to support Warman.

I have the Windows CE version of the WriteRight on my Visor and it fits as well as the "real" Palm one, and I suspect a bit better than the Palm IIIc one since that one's slightly smaller. I've had the same one on there for 6 months, I wipe it every week or so with RainX, and it's in fine shape, even over the Graffiti area.

So there's no need to support a bloke whose only talent seems to be bad HTML.

Intellectual Property

Actually, Mistar Warman (or should I call you Mister B?) I have contributed quite a lot of my own intellectual property to the public domain over the past 20 years, simply because that was the socially and ethically appropriate thing to do. I didn't see a need to patent "the use of regular expressions in prioritising logging messages" or "predicting file types from file names", features picked up by FreeBSD and AmigaDOS 2.0. Maybe I should have, given the way unscrupulous litigants "borrow" ideas from other people and slip them into modified patents using a loophole in the patent system.

Reminds me of this bloke in New England a few years ago who would go around harassing people's employers under the guise of protecting the electoral laws... oddly enough, he only went after folks who disagreed with him on usenet. He could put on a much better front than you.

Hey, what's the deal with Write-Rights? How come they don't have to kowtow to your patent? Oh yeh, they were already in production when your modified patent went through... maybe you should be paying royalties to them, instead.

Ok, maybe this is off subject, but I use the vinyl protectors that you make yourself from walmart, and I just spray on Prestone silicone lubricant from the auto department and they have very few bubbles, if any if you do it right and they still stick to the screen fairly well. plus no fear of shorting out the Visor like with water.

Just thought I'd throw that in.

Write Rights

(So damn transparent you could use *him* as a screen protector)

Anyway, the Windows CE version of the Write Rights have proven the best choice for me. They go on much cleaner than vinyl (I've tried both), and with minimal care (I use RainX on them and as I mentioned my second Write Right has lasted six months now) one pack of 12 should last as long as your Visor.

Another advantage of Write Rights over vinyl is that even the thinnest vinyl is much thicker than the Write Rights. It made the screen feel mushy and unresponsive.

I'd have to agree that the WinCE Palm-size ones are the way to go for me at least. The regular ones just make the screen too dark.

I'm currently using 811 tape over the Graffiti area as well - I guess I'm a little heavy with the stylus.

Also using the Concept Kitchen Brain Wash wet/dry wipes to clean it up - will probably go back to using Novus No. 1 plastic polish when the supply of wipes that came with the PDA Survival Kit runs out. I'll have to give the Rain-X a try sometime.

Found a solution

Hi all,

Thank you for all of the responses to my question. I didn't mean to start a heated discussion.

I ended up going with clear plastic (.4mm gauge). I agree that the clear plastic does feel kinda spongy so I put a sticky note on the writing area so that my stylus will glide a little easier. So far, it is working great. I do see what everyone was talking about with the glare but I do find that I'm willing to take that over not having a clear screen with no glare.

I've got some bubbles but I actually have less than with the WriteRights. That maybe beginners luck though.

Finally, you can't beat the cost. WriteRights cost $27 for 12 sheets. I bought a 1/4 yard of the clear plastic for $0.50. This should last me for the life of my Visor
