Question neo or deluxe??

Hi all,

I was just wondering, what is the difference between the neo and the deluxe? I think they both have 8mb mem right?
When I was looking at the prices at CompUSA they had the Neo for 130, and the deluxe for 99. Is there any thing you get with the Neo that is worth the extra 30 bucks.
I used to have a deluxe a while ago and loved it, but it was in a padded case and fell about 2 feet to the ground and the screen shattered.
I thought I could be without one but I miss the organization, it is scary when I have to rely on my own memory
So I am looking to buy another Handspring, just can't figure out which one. The Treo look great but I don't know if it is worth the 300 bucks for me. I only use the basic features, just want to store names and numbers, and appointments.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

The neo has a better screen, newer OS, and faster processor. Enough to warrant $30? Probably.

May I remind everyone that there is no difference between the Platinum and the Neo(Except for the fast-lookup feature)

Thumbs up

For just entering names and stuff the Treo is great because of the Keyboard...I also think that while you don't use it much now, with the colour screen and a visit to www.palmgear.com and other great sites you could use it to its full advantage.

If you still don't think the Treo is for you than I would recommend the Neo over the Deluxe. It has all the features listed above and the fast lookup feature is really useful in the phonebook...something you say you use a lot. You can also get some nice springboard modules for really cheap right now which you might find handy down the road.
Alex.

P.S. Don't get blue or red unless your prepared to constantly clean fingerprints off...it's not bad (I have a blue one) but it is a bit annoying.

thanks for the info..

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I guess I just have to figure out if I should buy a NEO now or wait a month or 2 and get the Treo. This may be the wrong place to post this... being a visor board and all... but what about Palms? I just have always liked the visors better, don't know why. Is there anything I am missing out on by not considering a Palm?

Thanks

Exclamation

No, your not really missing anything in the palm camp...their Neo equivalent, the M125 has a smaller screen and no springboard...it's not as nice a handheld as the Neo...the next up is the M130 which is the same except it has a colour screen...while this is designed to go up against the Treo 90 it has half the memory and graffiti instead of the keyboard.

In general I think that Palm makes a wonderful OS but that's about it, their handhelds are sadly lacking in many areas.
Alex.

I upgraded from a Deluxe to a Neo about 5 months ago for a few reasons.

1- OS 3.5- required in order to use some of the cooler features of the MemPlug that I got as a birthday present.

2- Processor speed- 33Mhz vs. 16Mhz. This was never much of an issue until I got a VisorPhone and started browsing the web. Seemed a bit safer than over-clocking living daylights out of my Deluxe, although I never had any problems running the Deluxe in the mid 20's.

3- Screen- Much smoother pictures. Also was never much of an issue until the web browsing started.

4- Smoke. Mmmmm.

If you'll be doing anythng with graphics or there's a chance you'll buy any modules that aren't compatible with OS 3.1 I say absolutely go for the Neo. Otherwise, the Deluxe will be just fine. Sorry if you already bought one.

ALMOST enough for a splitting headache...

Deluxe, Neo, Platinum? Okay, Deluxe is gone. Wait, isn't Platinum gone? Yeah, its the same as the Neo. But wait, the Platinum isn't gone. Is it the same as the Neo? Yeah, specs read identical. Gee, if its got all the great features of the Neo ... but ... no slippery case ... hmmm ... maybe I should.

Oh Handspring, Handspring? Why are you putting us through this? If you think you are going to wear me down enough to buy a Treo, though I never say never, let me put it this way ... "I-Do-Not-Need-A-Treo"

Until they can invent a garage door opener that doesn't open your neighbors garage or worse ... let's stick with stuff with a few wires. okee-dokee?

Exclamation Refurb Visor NEO at CompUSA.com for $80

Yes, that's what I said, $80 for a Visor NEO Smoke refurb. And guess what? They sell a refurb Plat for $100.00! Go figure!

http://www.compusa.com (search on "Handspring")

So what is this about the Fast Find feature? Which model has that, Plat or Neo? Doesn't Handspring have a patch to add it anyway? Does my Prism have this feature? I know I have a "Find" feature, is that the same thing?

If you really want a Plat, there is a deal on a bundle at Micro Warehouse until the end of August. They have a Visor Platinum
bundled with a Minstrel S wireless modem module (NOT a cell phone or WiFi/WAP unit, but a CDPD subscription service) for only $100, after you send off for the $50 rebate. You pay $150 up front. AND you get a free Pocket Chess deluxe springboard!

http://www2.warehouse.com/product.a...07&cat=home

Myself, I ordered the cheap NEO as a backup to my Prism. I can also use the NEO outside in daylight, where I cannot read my color Prism screen. Also, I will prefer using the NEO in the field(packing spare AAA's) over the always energy hungry Prism.

And regarding the case issue of Plat vs. NEO, I had heard that the silver painted Plat (Pro, too?) starts to show wear around the corners, exposing a cheesy gray plastic underneath its shiny silver paint. And I also heard the fingerprint problem was worse with the Blue and Red NEO's than with the Smoke color. It is a moot point for me anyway as I plan to stick the NEO into an Active Armor rubber case!

Happy Visoring!

Go for Neo

I suggest you go for Neo only if you dont mind a non color screen. If you want a new palm with a color screen go for the Prism. Dont go for the Treo 90 if your already good at Graffiti, trust me you will miss the silk screen buttons and you make just about as much mistakes using the keyboard the first time as graffiti. You have to push two buttons to get the home icon! That is probly the most annopying thing to the Treos. Plus getting the Treo would get rid of the springboard expansion capabilities and if youve had a Deluxe and have been using some modules with it, there wont be anything to do with them now.

If you havent exactly mastered Graffiti and have no springboards and feel you wont want any and want a nice but not the best color screen then Treo 90 is right for you.

The Neo is faster than the Deluxe and has a better processor so I wouldnt go back to a Deluxe. Plus the different colors are kewl . Thats my opinions. Cya

Jonathan

Treo, Neo, nothing is for Free-o

Moon, June, give me a Tune.

What's all that mean? Nothing, I am just rambling. And now a word from our sponsor....

Hey, Jonathon is right, no point in getting another VDX, unless you are a real cheapskate (VDX refurbs for $50!). A lot of newer software just won't work on anything less than PalmOS 3.5, and Visors are not OS upgradeable (Hmmm, one reason to go to the Treo).

I have a Prism. Color is way better than Treo, so for games, photos, even Web surfing (which I have not done yet, but my Handspring Modem is on its way, and I still have ATT Worldnet Dialup for the moment) it is THE way to go for under $300 bucks.
I hate to sound like I am banging the drum for CompUSA, but they do have Prism refurbs for $169.99, while some retail stores still want $250 to $300 for new units, if you can find one. I thought I had a deal at Father's Day when I had my wife get me the Prism at Office Max for $250, with a $50 rebate, my final price would have been $200, but she lost the paperwork!

But for down and dirty Organizer, Word Processing, and even a lot of games and utilities, color is just not necessary, in fact the Prism gets totally washed out in daylight. I had heard the Treo is not so bad because it is not TFT, but that is the trade-off.

If I was using it for business, and the company was paying for it, or at least it was a deductible expense, I would go for the color Treo phone (what is the number anyway?). It has a great form factor and usability without clunkiness for the organizer/phone combo so necessary in business.

Otherwise, being the thrifty part Scotsman that I am, I will keep my split personality, using my Prism inside and at night, and my new refurb Neo outside in daylight and in the field. The plus is I can keep my toys (Springboards) working on the Neo if my Prism does finally byte the big one. Besides, it will be fun looking for Visors and Springboards at garage sales and flea markets for the next 10 years! <grin>

I could consider a Cleo, I mean Clio, but then I don't have the bucks to get the T615 (I think that is the right number), the one with all the toys built-in...camera, MP3, color screen, memory card slot (OK, Memory Stick), phone, wait a minute!...no phone, for $600 bucks? Sony, c'MON! What's up with that!

Ah, but I ramble once again....

OOOOOPS!

Earlier I said:

>Yes, that's what I said, $80 for a Visor NEO Smoke refurb. And guess what? They sell a refurb Plat for $100.00! Go figure!

I meant, "refurb Deluxe for $100.00" (well, OK, its $99.99)

That makes my comment a little more meaningful. Sorry for any confusion!

WHERE did you get those figures?

>Benchmarks--

Palm IIIe // xe----- 100% base
Deluxe---------------145%
Neo------------------ 165%
Plat-------------------204%
Edge-----------------244%

Why would a Plat run any faster than a Neo with the same processor, same RAM, same clock speed, etc.,etc., etc.!!!!

And what could possibly make the Edge faster than both of them?Wait, I know! Cosmic radiation! Radiation must be affecting the quartz crystal that controls the clock speed, or else it otherwise messes up the inner workings of the Dragonball microprocessor. Cosmic radiation goes right through the translucent Neo cases, but the silicon computer chip is shielded a little by the metallic particles in the Plat's silvery paint. And then the Edge. with its solid metal case does such a superb job of shielding that its processor runs completely uneffected! Right?

Please enlighten us with the source for these data, and what are the corresponding numbers for the Prism and Pro? I hope that all models were tested with an equal amount of free RAM. That is the only thing that I could possibly think could make a difference, if some portion of the processor cycle time was spent reviewing the status of other software or data on its system.

I am not a EE or CSci. so maybe I am showing my ignorance here, but something smells fishy.

This is from running the standard---(Been around since '99) benchmark program-- I think there are others out there --I believe with the same results-- They are often used when people overclock their PDA(s) but they're interesting anyway-

Freewarepalm.com has several--Under utilities--Other-

Here's the URL for the most common one--

http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/benchmark.shtml

I believe the consenus--When this fiirst came out--was that the Edge was tweaked just a bit--wuth HS desperately tring to sell that at 400 bux and wanting them to seem a real imporovement--But that'sjust the gossip I heard--I don't KNOW why it's a bit faster--just that apparently it is--

Try the program--It's free and kinda cool--
