I looked at the DirectConnect site and they make no mention of a cable offering that connects the VDX to a Nokia 6185 or 61xx family.

Is anyone out there currently using this setup? Like everyone else, I'd like to use my cell phone to dial directly to my ISP.

I've written to DirectConnect but they have not answered my customer service request.

It is not a one-cable solution, but it works well and I've been using it on a regular basis.

Whoops. Further clarification.

Whoops. I read the thread almost immediately as you were posting your reply.

My problem is that I don't have Sprint service. I have a firm called US Cellular.

I've written to MarkSpace just a sec ago. I hope that they have some thoughts.

I wonder if my ThinModem would help this situation...

Well, markspace's solution should work with any ISP as long as US Cellular offers some sort of data/web access. Even though I have sprint, I still have to dial my personal ISP to get on the 'net. Sprint just allows me to use their network to send data instead of audio.

I'm still not clear as to why you need the Sprint Web service since you're basically making a phone call to your own ISP.

As long as you have a dial up account with your own ISP, it seems redundant to sign up to have a Sprint Web ISP account.

Am I missing something here?

Sprint wireless web is not an ISP...
The problem is that you will notice that there is not a modem in my list of equipment.

The modem resides not in the Visor or the phone, but on Sprint's hardware. You have to get special 'permission' in order to make a data call versus a voice call. Basically, you are sending your digital info all the way to Sprint before it becomes analog, goes across regular phone lines, and then arrives at your ISP's modem.

I am not sure if I made myself clear (I am needing caffeine badly), so here is Sprint's explaination:

Now if you had an acoustic coupler, you could talk analog directly to the phone, but it would be really slow (2400 baud). I pondered this here:

Sprint "Virtual Modem"

Whoa. I didn't realize that it was just a virtual modem on the cell phone rather than an actual modem built in.

Well, that really is disappointing.



I have a ThinModem... I wonder if there isn't a cable that will hook up a standard phone cable into a cell phone. That would bridge the gap into the Visor (the Springport) and solve the issue of the signal translation into modem squeal.

Since this thread seems to be a direct conversation between Thinman and myself so far... I'd welcome other people's comments to this issue.

So do all cell phones use this "Virtual Modem" approach or are there phones with modems actually built in as I had originally assumed?
