You can get 'open box' deals on computers and other equipment direct from companies nowadays, wouldn't it be nice if HS did something similar? I mean, if they started offering the upgrade price, they could then take the old Visors and resell them (for a higher price than they were traded at) as an open-box dealie.

I know I've bought a few things like this and gotten great equipment at greatly reduced cost. Do you think PDA people would go for something similar?

mmm, maybe you should open a seperate thread for that question.... my answer would be: depends on the price difference with a new unit and the warrenty...

back to the original question;
I would like it that Handspring would give registered users would get a discount (let's say $50) if they buy a Platinum or Prism.... The used visors are no use to HS I guess but this way they thank there current users...
Ahwell, one can only dream

Unhappy

Palm has never offered upgrade pricing except to their beta testers. With the release of the earnings report still showing a loss, I'd bet that the finance committee at Handspring would play serious bean counter and nix any upgrade offers.

Handspring would have to allow a small amount towards an upgrade because of the cost involved in handling and refurbishing and it's a limited market.

How many people that don't have a PDA would buy one for more than $100 bucks? since the Visor is only $149. How many people would expect to get $85 bucks for a used piece of equipment that a new unit is $149.

It's a nice idea but there is very little precedent/value to someone's old PDA being attractive to the market and hence Handspring recovering that loss.

I know I wouldn't buy a used piece of equipment of this type unless the price was well below $50 because of the fear of damage and failure. For $100 worth of my time it's not worth taking the chance on getting a bad piece of hardware that I'd have to ship back or troubleshoot.

Thumbs down Upgrade / Tradein

Just Got and email back from HS and they stated that had heard from many of us but did NOT plan on a trade in program at this time. I think we need to keep the pressure on and hope for the best.

Pressure on Handspring.

Maybe we should get something together. Like a petition or something and send it to handspring. The more supporters, the better chance we would have to get handspring to listen. I will probably not get a new prism or platnium because of the price and that I already have my Visor Deluxe. Reply if anyone would be interested in a petition for a trade in price sort of thing with ideas.

Brian,

Now that's a creative and constructive way of channeling our two cents! I think you're on to something here.

Let's do that! Anyone else think that that would be good to show the collective mind of the Visor community? I think that Handspring would consider it a little more seriously if we collected some kind of short petition and submitted it to them. How would we go about this?

Arrow Skeptical

NOw why would Handspring offer upgrades when they are *still* selling the Visor deluxe and Visor for the same price they were selling it for a year ago? ANd why would Handspring offer upgrades when their competition..namely Palm does not offer it?

Want to upgrade? Sell your Visor on Ebay and buy a new one. That what I did.

They could use our working visor as parts for their new versions. I have heard the new platnium uses many of the same parts.

About the petition idea, lets try and get Visor Central involved in this too, they could help us out alot.

I in a sense get what your talking about:

My dad and I both got 2 meg visors at around the same time and my dad got talked in to buying one of thoes CompUSA return deals. When he learned about how stupid and pointless it was, he became determened to use it. when the new visors came out I expressed intrest in the platunim, and Dad aggreed to trade in his visor, buy the platunim (with me paying the diffrence) and take my two meg version. and the end resuld is I get a platnuim for 120 dollors

and no I'm not going to bet the warinty again

I, for one, wouldn't be too interested in buying a "new" Visor Deluxe/Platinum/Prism if it contained parts scavenged from used units, and I don't think Handspring should be petitioned to subsidize a program that would- (A)Cost them money and (B)Lead to a decline in quality if implemented as discussed in this thread.

An upgrade program would be nice for customers, but I still don't see how Handspring would stand to benefit other than the good karma of giving refurbs away to schools, charities, whatever. (Would the tax write-off really offset the cost of refurbishing all of the trade-in units, and the profit loss they'd be taking on the Platinum/Prisms they'd be sending to people?)

I want to upgrade, too, but I don't expect Handspring to take a loss (or at least cut in profit) on a new Visor because I can't be bothered to do the legwork to sell my VDx on ebay. Maybe it's the semantics that bug me; "petition" implies entitlement, and I don't think that people are entitled to a trade-in program just because it would be a nice price-break.

Talking

Have any of you that are interested in the PRISM stopped to think about what you are getting for that $449.00 price.

Like many of you, I was very enthusiastic about the PRISM.
Then foo fighter turned me onto something much more worth the money - The Compaq IPAQ! I get color, pocket word, pocket excel, 32mg memory, the fastest PDA processor
(233mghz I believe) on the market, built in voice recorder, built in media player that plays mp3's........

Many of the above items I would have to buy expensive springboards for if I bought the PRISM and everyone knows about the doc creating/editing/transferring to word problems with the palm OS.

The expandability is similar to the Visor, but for $50.00 more, I am going with IPAQ IF I CAN FIND ONE! It's one of the most requested PDAS right now.

I have read many reviews and most people that gave up the visor or palm are very, very happy!

Just something to think about.

The Palm OS, a design by someone who understands what PDAs are for, third-party software support...

Which is generally outperformed by a Palm OS device running one tenth as fast.

Which skips when you try to use another feature.

No, I don't -- please enlighten me; expecially since I've written quite a bit with the Palm OS.

I kind of like this comment from Walter Anasagasti when discussing the HP Jornada.

First and most importantly, the PIM functions suck, and this after all is the main purpose for owning a handheld device in the first place. Pocket Outlook is far slower and more difficult to access, use, read, customize, and synchronize than its Palm counterparts. It is sheer hell to use.

What I tend to think about is why PocketPC enthusiasts keep poppping up on Palm OS boards. There's certainly a lot of stuff out there I don't like, but I've never felt compelled to pop over to their boards and let them know it. Why do you?
