Hi gm319. The one reference book I recommend is David Pogue's Palm Pilot: The Ultimate Guide, Second Edition. Although it is a book about Palms, the second edition includes information about the Visor as well.
A couple of reasons why I recommend David Pogue's book:
Pogue is a master at writing easy-to-read software manuals.
This book is written so that you can read it page by page, or just use it as a reference book to look things up. For example, it has an excellent index (a hallmark of any good manual).
The book comes with a CD-ROM chock full of great freeware and shareware. While you can download the same things, it's just more convenient to have it all in one location on one media.
Pogue doesn't take you for a fool or moron, like those various "for dummies" and "idiot" type books.
The book is listed for $30, but you can get it for 20% off at either Amazon.com or Fatbrain.com.
Happy reading!!
Except that the information is outdated, the software has been upgraded and new stuff has come out that this book doesn't talk about (prism, platinum, Vx, IIIc, etc. not to mention great software e.g. WordSmith). Even at that I still think it's better than the others out there. I'd wait until the updated version comes out in March. Until then support your local library.
P.S. David Pogue is also the author of numerous "... for Dummies" books. The writing style is the same between his "Dummies" books and his "PalmPilot, The Ultimate Guide" book. The only difference is the publisher. The author makes the difference between being talked down to or entertainingly informed.
