Can I get some suggestions on the best reference book to help me use the full potential of my Visor?
Should I get one of the books specifically written for Visors or a general Palm book?

Books are fine, but . . .

You might want exhaust your online options first. There are several FAQs (including the one here), web boards, etc. that should be helpful. The problem with books is that they are all too quickly outdated. But, if it is books that you just must have, O'Reilley has a good general Palm OS book, and there is a Visor specific book out there. I'm sure one of the contributors to the Visor book will provide all the info . . .

Thumbs up

The one I picked up was called "How to do everything with your Visor" by Rick Broida and Dave Johnson. it covers everything. Sure you could save a few bucks by scowering the web but If your like me the majority of the stuff I needed was in thi book.

Hi gm319. The one reference book I recommend is David Pogue's Palm Pilot: The Ultimate Guide, Second Edition. Although it is a book about Palms, the second edition includes information about the Visor as well.

A couple of reasons why I recommend David Pogue's book:
Pogue is a master at writing easy-to-read software manuals.
This book is written so that you can read it page by page, or just use it as a reference book to look things up. For example, it has an excellent index (a hallmark of any good manual).
The book comes with a CD-ROM chock full of great freeware and shareware. While you can download the same things, it's just more convenient to have it all in one location on one media.
Pogue doesn't take you for a fool or moron, like those various "for dummies" and "idiot" type books.

The book is listed for $30, but you can get it for 20% off at either Amazon.com or Fatbrain.com.

Happy reading!!

You may be too advanced for "Dummies" book but if you are thinking about getting one of them, it depends on your computer. If you use PC, "Visor for Dummies" is good. But if you use Mac, I heard "Dummies for Palm" is better since Visor one doesn't mention Mac at all. Also a new edition of "Dummies for Palm" is coming out this month.

Except that the information is outdated, the software has been upgraded and new stuff has come out that this book doesn't talk about (prism, platinum, Vx, IIIc, etc. not to mention great software e.g. WordSmith). Even at that I still think it's better than the others out there. I'd wait until the updated version comes out in March. Until then support your local library.
P.S. David Pogue is also the author of numerous "... for Dummies" books. The writing style is the same between his "Dummies" books and his "PalmPilot, The Ultimate Guide" book. The only difference is the publisher. The author makes the difference between being talked down to or entertainingly informed.

Angry New edition in March?

dick-richardson,

where/how did you find out that there is going to be another edition of this book in March?

I got my Platinum in Novemeber (couldn't wait for Xmas ) and heard good things about that book here on VisorCentral as well as other boards, so I picked it up (though I 'shoulda known better, since I rarely read such books; I get everything online).

After reading your post, I bounced over to O'Reilly's site and Palm section and didn't see any notice of such an edition. Enlighten me? Thanks in advance.

Hi mromano33 -- Your best bet is to go check his home page periodically at http://www.pogueman.com, or subscribe to get his announcements via email.

dick-richardson -- yeah yeah, you're right. Pogueman *DOES* write those "X for Dummies" books... at least his don't sound too condascending or pedantic.

It was somewhere on www.davidpogue.com. I'll update the link when/if I can narrow it down further.
