Cool

It is so cool!

Sorry for not posting more, but I'm busy playing with my new toy. I'll post more comments later.

We're waiting....

Hey! Congrats on getting your Edge. We're all waiting to hear how users like it. I'm sure it looks darn cool in hand rather than in pictures.

Big questions on everyone's mind:

Does it work with the Stowaway?

Does it work with the Minstrel S? (I've got YadaYada)

I know there are others, but those were two that I have.

Stop playing and give us some feedback! :-p

Thanks.
Mike

How fast is the fast lookup on the addresses...

And..

If you have eyecontact, will the fast lookup work with that???

And...

I'm Jealous!

My question:

What about the screen? Is it noticeably better than the Deluxe or Platinum?

Cool gadgeteer reviews edge

Julie Strietelmeier is reviewing the new Edge over at the gadgeteer site - updates throughout the day, not much up as of 2 minutes ago.

Angry

Sorry for not posting more info sooner, I've spent the last 30 minutes trying to get Win98 to recognize the USB drivers. For some reason Windows couldn't find them...what else is new!

Right now my Edge is syncing with my desktop.

dietrichbohn:

I haven't had a chance to try the new find features. I will let you know when I have more time to explore.

Lennonhead:

I haven't really had the chance to look at the screen on a Platinum, but I would say the Edge is comparable to a Palm V display. It has the same silky mint texture....and, unfortunately, the same backlight. One thing I do like is the fact that the Edge doesn't use the same cradle hook system used on other Visors. You simply slide it out.

Also, the built-in alarm is VERY loud. No more missed appointments!

Overall the Edge is a real piece of art, in terms of industrial design. What I find most amusing is that it is a dead ringer for the Apple PowerBook G4, especially the profile! You got to love that!

graffiti

How is graffiti recognition on the Edge? Any scary problems (a la prism) that you can see?

Exclamation

No Graffiti problems at all. The only thing I do notice is the screen feels very "soft" to write on. But the stylus is very good quality, so I don't anticipate scratching to occur.

Scratches?

My only concern is that the metallic finish would be prone to ugly scratches - any feedback this early?

Any streaking on the display? By the way ... when did you order it?

Arrow

No streaking at all. It's very much like the Palm V display.

And I ordered it Monday, just 10 minutes after the live webcast.

After using it for a couple hours now, I'm extremely impressed. It's a beautiful example of artistic design...sort of half PDA/half modern art. I love it! The only thing I'm not too fond of is the stylus. It can be somewhat awkward to use and it tends to rattle a little when attached to the case. Also, I don't like the black tip. It doesn't stand out very well against the screen and is obscured at times. HS should have gone with a bright orange tip instead to make writing easier.

Other than that I haven't found any shortcoming to the design.

Question

How is the scratch-resistance? Is it pocket-proof? How bad is the rattling of the stylus? Is it going to come out of its holder in my pocket?

Thanks

...(Jeez, we're like vultures!)...

I am also worried (and was from the start) about that stylus. Seems to me that rattling==bad design...

Also, that cover looked thin, is it chinsy? How about them edges (on the cover), too sharp....?

This might be a scary question, but is there a lot of flex to it? My first VDX bent and swayed for some reason, and had to be returned.

...Thanks!

Unhappy

chungmike: The Edge does *not* work with the Stowaway. I received confirmation on this earlier today from Handspring headquarters.

Big bummer.

Question What about the sounds ???

Are the alarms any louders. If by any chance you have or know someone with a visorphone, can you tell my how it looks with the edge, a photo would be nice, also if you can tell me if the rings are any louder with the edge visorphone combination

Mhat:

The screen doesn't seem prone to scratching, but it does feel "soft". I've been writing on it for quite a while entering data, so far no scratches. Let's hope it stays that way!

Not sure what you mean by "Pocket Proof", but it fits quite comfortably in my pocket, and doesn't seem vulnerable to any damage there.

The rattling is only minor, and no the stylus can NOT come out of its holder. In fact, you have to press the release button in order to remove it from its holder.

dietrichbohn:

The cover does seem thin by its appearance, but its not really flimsy, and it certainly doesn't bend or flex at all. At least..not that I can tell. No sharp edges either...even though that is its name.

One thing I should note is that the metal case does not have the same "feel" as the Palm V. It's seems to be the exact same aluminum shell used on the HP Jornada.
