Whatever happened to the Springboard version of Bluetooth?

It's still under development at Xircom.

I have a feeling though that we migh be seeing Visor bluetooth soon. I think that the wirless visor that Donna talked about will have bluetooth, GSM, and 802.11b.. (ok I'm dreaming up still!)

Yeah...I don't think we'll see ALL of that. Why hasn't Handspring taken advantage of its Qualcomm license? Maybe the next wireless Visor will have CDPD.

Matthew, I think you mean CDMA. That will be good especially if it is cdma2000, the Visor will probably be an integrated phone/PDA with higher data rates (~150Kbps).

No, I meant CDPD - as in Cellular Digital Packet Data. I believe its related to CDMA, but its data only, operates at a higher speed of 19.2k (vs CDMA's 14.4k), and features MUCH faster call setup. The Minstrel S, from Novatel Wireless, uses this.

CDMA / CDPD

Warkari observations are entirely sound.

CDPD is a packet switched digital datagram service built on top of the physical infrastructure and frequency bands of AMPS (the Advanced Mobile Phone System - the 1st generation cellular telephone technology (analog)).
It was added to the voice network systems after their implementation, and its design was constrained by the situation that no changes could be made these systems.
The technology was developed by IBM, which together with 9 operating companies formed the CDPD Forum to develop an open standard and multivendor environment for a packet-switched network using the AMPS systems.
The CDPD specification was completed in 1993 with key contributions from IBM, McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc., and Pacific Communications Sciences, Inc. Deployment of the 19.2-kbps CDPD infrastructure, designed to make use of idle channels in analog cellular systems, commenced in 1995.

CDMA is quite different; it is a set of a digital cellular technologies that uses spread-spectrum techniques.
There are now a number of variations of CDMA, in addition to the original Qualcomm-invented N-CDMA. For a more learned and extensive discussion of CDMA, past present and future, please read:-

CDPD is the ISDN of the wireless world. It was a really interesting technology for which great things were predicted, but will likely never materialize. It's not really related to CDMA, though. CDMA2000 or EDGE will be a much more likely standard to catch on (although I think Handspring's idea of having the functionality as an add-on module is the One True Way to implement it).

Handspring licensed CDMA, not CDPD, from Qualcomm. A CDMA version of the VisorPhone, the SB1000, will be OEMed from AirPrime to carriers like Sprint PCS later this year.

Widcomm's is available already as part of a developer's kit. Their rep at Fall '00 Comdex claimed that Acer was supposedly going to be OEMing them (which makes me wonder about Acer's announced PDA, but I would think that HS would have announced it if they were going to be a Springboard slot licensee). Xircom will probably be first with a consumer version, though.

But will it be a huge hose beast (in cost and size) like their wireless ethernet?

If the mockup on their website is any indicator, probably not size-wise. Cost-wise, well, it's Xircom. It's bound to be more expensive than most will want to pay.

Well, it is a little thicker than it oughta be. Really, if they've got bluetooth in those little ericsson phones, does the module have to be so big?

I haven't seen any phones with bluetooth built in yet. All of the ones I've seen require a dongle that's at least the size of the Xircom module. Here is one example.

The Ericsson R520 has built in Bluetooth, as will most (if not all) of their future handsets. I use the Bluetooth module with my T28 World, and have had nothing but good experiences with it.

Never seen it in person, but it certainly doesn't look that small (looks slightly thinner, but not really any less long or wide as the Nokia 51XXs and 61XXs).

If that's any indication of how big bluetooth chipsets will be, the Palm and Sony bluetooth cards/sticks are
going to look ridiculous.

The Nokia 6210 (which natively supports HSCD) has a BlueTooth adapter that fits within the battery compartment, so there is no increase in phone size.

I can't wait for the 6310 though, which includes built-in HSCSD, GPRS & Bluetooth.
