Question

I just got a Visor Dx about a week ago. A friend beamed me a bunch of apps and games most of which I've thrown out.
My memory sits at just 16% with not much more than the original apps installed. Where did it go? I've heard that there are problems with "memory leakage". Saw some freeware app to get it back. Any info on this problem or a possible solution?
Dana

Question

What programs do you have? Avantgo can be a hog. You might try downloading a program called filez. It will allow you to look over your programs and find out what is taking up so much space. You can find it at Palmgear.

Missing memory

I'm using Vindigo, X-Master hack and a backlight hack, Wordsmith, a virtual keyboard and big clock. All seemed pretty small. Doesn't explain the missing 82% (a little over 6.5 Mb) I'll check out that program.
Thanks,
Dana

You might check out some of the post on Wordsmith. although it's not that big by itself. When you start processing documents it can really get big. I dont know much about Vindigo although if it contains maps and such they can get rather large.

Yeah, the Palm O.S. is pretty rock-steady.
I haven't found it mem.-leaks like the Windows OS (not nec. 'CE, but I wouldn't be surprised).
Whenever I think the Palm OS is playing tricks w/the mem. or the stats, or whatever -- it's always right, & I'm always wrong.
Since your VDX is new, I'd suspect you may have a freak bad unit -- that'd be super-rare, but I guess it could happen. If the only apps you have on your unit are the ones you've listed, the only other thing I can think of at the moment is many of the apps you assume are perm. deleted are really still in the BACKUP dir. on your PC (under the YOUR_NAME dir.), and re-install each time you synch.
Some apps you have to be sure to blow away from this dir. when you delete them off your Visor, too.

Hacks are notorious for confusing the operating system. You might try deleting or at least disabling any hack(s) you have installed before calling handspring for a replacement.

Then do a reset.

Might help. Might not. Worth a try.

Lightbulb Word docs?

Check to see how many Word documents you have on WordSmith. It's possible that you've inadvertently synchronized all the .doc files from your My Documents folder (assumer you're using Windows) onto your Visor. The one obvious, but tedious, thing to try if that's not the problem is to do a hard reset, synch your Palm desktop (disabling WordSmith and Vindigo for the moment) and reinstalling your apps. Not fun, but it'll probably do the trick.

So-called "memory leakage" is a different problem altogether, which has nothing to do with hogging up memory. If a program (through an error in the programming) addresses a space in a computer's memory that hasn't been properly allocated for use, all hell can break lose. If you're lucky, the program will only crash.

I was reading your post and thought for a while and the same thingw as happening to me. So i played around and found out that all my deleted apps was in the trash bin, kinda like Windows. So i emptied my trash (I use mega launcher II) and i got 4.3 megs back!!!!!!!!! I'm not sure if this is happening to you, but you should try see. I'm not sure how to empty trash with the regular palm OS stuff though. Good luck!!!

Arrow PalmGear

Do a search for MegaLauncher at www.palmgear.com. If you are referring to mapapolis, you can find it at www.mapapolis.com.

Hmmmmmm ... I didn't want to say, but I suspected there MUST have been something more loaded on your HSVD.

Goes to show, though prob. the "avg. size" of most Palm O.S. apps is prob. 10k -- there are (esp. recently) a few KEY apps that are huge.

I've encountered something similar to that problem--
Sometimes deleted apps leave old databases behind, which don't necessarily show up in the Info or Delete screen, but still take up memory. This especially happens with apps that back up their databases but not the .prc, so the next time you lose all your data and restore from your desktop computer, you end up with your Giraffe high scores and that e-book you finished reading two months ago, for example, but not the .prcs associated with them.
I use Beam Box to manually delete what I don't need (since I keep BeamBox on my handheld anyway).
Also, it's always a good idea to clean out your backup folder now and then and delete .pdb files from programs you don't have anymore.
