Red face

I finally received my Visor Platinum. I've used it side by side with my old Visor Deluxe. The Platinum IS faster, especially when using Avant Go. But I've noticed the Platinum screen's screen is worse! The Platinum's screen has poorer contrast, and I am having trouble reading the Platinum's screen even in decent light. I compared it with the Deluxe... the difference is that the background of the Platinum, the "off pixels" are not as clear/white as the "off pixels" on the Deluxe! So instead of getting black pixels on white pixels, you get black pixels on darkish pixels, making visibility poor.

I was wondering if anyone else had this experience. Did I just get a bad Platinum? Is this because the Platinum uses more "colors"? (I believe it is 4-bit.)

Thanks for any suggestions,
Cathy Towner

Cathy, looking at my new Platinum (bought yesterday) and my Visor Deluxe side by side, the screens on both are excellent and clearly visible in daylight as well. Could you have gotten a "lemon"?

I had the same problems with my VPL, I also am having problems with Greyscale applications washing out so that I can barely see them. I called Handspring about the problem yesterday, and they are shipping me a new unit.

So yes, I have adjusted the contrast. I'm not sure it's as bad as d_malnati says. I guess I'm being nitpicky... but the Platinum's screen is SUBTLY worse. I mean it works fine in daylight, but it's contrast has to be set pretty high... much higher than my Deluxe's contrast... to be similarly clear. It's like I said before... the background "off" pixel is a shade too dark. I guess I'm being perfectionist about this.

Cathy, I had the exact same problem with contrast. My replacement Platinum is vastly different. On the replacement, I only have to set the bar a little bit past the left edge. On the original I had to go 3/4 of the way to the right.
