From Handspring PalmDesktop: you can only use a Serial cable to synch if running on NT.
Can I synch using a USB Hotsynch cable? Has anyone successfully synching using USB on an NT machine, if so please tell me know. Thank you much in advance.

NT doesn't have support for USB, so no, it won't work.

I think SpeakerCoach is asking about using the USB cable with a USB to serial adaptor. I haven't done it. Since I wanted to sync both at home and at work, I just bought a serial cradle.

It should be possible. I have a Logitech USB mouse that came with a USB to 9pin mini-din connection that I ran on NT for several months before I upgraded to Win2k. The mouse port is a dedicated serial port. I've also seen adaptors to connect serial devices to the USB port on a Mac. Ask some of your geeky friends if they have any left over mini-din to 9 pin serial connectors (mouse adaptors) and USB to serial mouse adaptors. Put two together and try. You can't hurt anything. You might try your local Radio Shack or CompUSA, etc. for adaptors if you can't find a geeky packrat in your neighborhood. Good luck!

There is another way (this will require you to shell over $80 bucks). If your computer has USB ports but is dedicated to running windows NT 4.0 (as my computer at work does), there is software from Blue Water Systems that will provide the native operating system to support USB on NT 4.0. I haven't tried it, thought about it, until my girlfriend got a computer with windows ME. I just use that, it's cheaper on my budget.

You can do what I did, get a signficant other with USB capabilities or upgrade to windows 2000.

It may be possible

Supposedly, NT 4.0 with service pack 6 WILL support USB, but my IS people say its not consistent (they could not get it to work all the time, and they couldn't figure out why,) so they disabled it on our network, rather than spend all their time trying to get it to work on specific machines.

If you have service pack 6 or higher (I don't know what they're up to), it might be worth trying to download the drivers.

A USB-to-Serial adapter won't work with a Visor USB cradle-- the HotSync Manager does not see the cradle and returns an error that the device cannot be found. Some geek tried it at work and no-go.
