Dockers Mobile Pants Revolutionize Pocket Design

Military pilots have enjoyed multiple pockets in the legs of their flight suits for years, why cant we? Finally, we can!

I got a pair of these for myself on my birthday last year. Yeah, they were a little on the expensive side ($50.00), but I don't go out and buy these things on a weekly basis.

From a styling point of view, hey, they're Dockers. Mighty comfortable and easy to take care of. From a gadget-carrying point of view, I was really surprised how well the myriad of pockets work in concealing my electronic gadgets. The look is much more professional without all those things hanging from my belt.

Hey, wait a minute. Isn't that why we buy these gadgets so that we can show them off on our belts?

2 different designs?

I bought a pair of these pants a couple of months ago. I noticed in your article that your pants have two inseam pockets(right and left legs) in the pair that i bought i only have one inseam pocket on the right leg. I have the kakhi and black pair. both only have one inseam pocket. Are there to different kinds? also in the ad both tv and magazines it shows there is plenty of room for a ipaq but its barely big enough for my visor. Even in the picture in your article shows a huge inseam pocket. On my pair i barely put my wallet in the inseam pocket. the rest of the pocket seems normal.

Extra Pockets

You are correct,

It would seem that there are different styles of these pants. The pair that I wrote about is a review unit I got from Dockers at Comdex 2001. I have looked at a few places online and i cant find my version with the two side pockets anywhere... They all seem to have one. I will investigate this more to find out why my pair is specail. I will post my findings as a cange to my review.

Pardon my French but in my opinion, these pants sucked! I tried them on at Kohls about six months ago and they looked fine and were comfortable enough without anything in the pockets. The one I tested had just one extra pocket.

However, I found them to be totally useless as anything other than standard pants. The lower pocket (the selling point) was way too small for a Visor (my Deluxe in its Vaja case was too tight and very uncomfortable when I sat down). Additionally I found the zipper on the lower pocket to be a two handed operation...one to hold the pants leg down and the other to pull the zipper (certainly not as easy as the guy on the commercial).

Unfortunately it seemed to me the upper pocket got squeezed a little bit on size to make room for the lower pocket and I found both to be inadequate.

Maybe these work for some people but definitely try them on and sit and stand and walk around with everything you might put in the pockets at one time...keys, wallet, Visor, cell phone, or whatever. They are NOT for everyone and will fit everyone differently!

You know for me, I just wear some good pairs of cargo pants (or shorts )

Since hte pockets are square, the stowaway isn't bulky, and sinceI wear baggy batns you don't really see bulges. I always have my keys, light and wallet in one pocket, visor in another, stowaway in another, and springbaord modules in another. Granted that this would probably only look acceptable on teens TEEN POWER! no, but it works well, and I always know where things are, and it's easy to get at! I've tried carryign all my **** in normal khakis - it's seriously almsot impossible... I guess thats wherethe dockers come in

Cargo pants rule!

But you can still get loose type pants in black without the front pockets like cargos. They are still ok as long as you look young. I don't get why people would want to stuff so much into their pants anyway. Doesn't matter how well they're designed, it's going to be uncomfortable unless you have them zip on/velcro things like the Nasa Austronauts. But that would look wierd

I say get a PDA bag (ala GrinderGear, RhinoSkin) or carry a bag pack if you have to lug so much stuff. Only the PDA/Cell needs to be on you when you're travelling. Heck with bluetooth module and headset you can chuck your mobile in your suitcase or bag.

I've tried keeping my Visor in a pair of cargo pants. Unfortunately, I have skinny legs, and the Visor kept slapping against my leg as I walked since they were loose right at my thigh.

These pants sound interesting, and if the price comes down I might pick up a pair. I have a feeling it would be similar to the problem with my cargo pants though.

As to 'old news', hey it's a review, not news. Keep your pants on.

i've got 'em

I got a pair of the mobile pants for Christmas. Here is my mini-review:

Pros:
* I like the right side hidden seam pocket a LOT. It is in the perfect place, and it is exactly the right size for my Visor Edge.
* The hidden mesh pockets inside the main pockets are nice for holding coins, cash, small flat items, and keeping things like that sorted out.
* They are good Dockers quality that I have come to know and love.
* Hidden pockets are easy to open: just yank down on the zipper tab.

Cons:
* The hidden mesh pockets are useless for carrying gear (well, my gear anyway). Because of the way they 'overlap' with the main pocket, it is no different than if I was carrying two things in a single pocket. For example, say I have my cell phone in the main left pocket, and my pager in the hidden left pocket. The pager ends up sitting on top of the cell phone, even though it is technically in another pocket.
* Hidden pockets are a pain to close: I must hold the bottom of the zipper with one hand while pulling up on it with the other hand. Otherwise, just pulling up on the zipper pulls the surrounding fabric up with it, and doesn't actually zip it shut.

Conclusion: These make nice dress slacks, but I wouldn't use them for carrying my gear most of the time. Besides, I always wear jeans to work, so the only time I wear these things is to church or other special occasions. The best thing I have found so far for carrying my gear is this:

This thing carries my: cell phone, visor edge, edge connector, magellan gps module, backup module, memplug module, nikon coolpix 775, and two pagers - with some extra room left over for papers, cash, whatever. Another plus is that it can be had for less than $10 (I think it was $7 when I bought it at CompUSA).

I've taken to calling it my 'bundle of joy' ;-) though my girlfriend still insists on calling it a purse. :-P It is definitely not the thing to be carrying around on some stylish occasion. But when I go to work I couldn't care less about style, so the bundle of joy comes with me. When I dress up, it's not usually an occasion where I need to carry all my gear, so the mobile pants would probably work fine with a bare minimum of my work pager in a back pocket (it's durable), my cell phone and keys in my left pockets, my edge in the right seam pocket, and wallet in the right pocket.

Cargo pants have also worked well for me. I don't mind the external, obvious pockets, especially at work. I even have a terrific pair of nylon L.L. Bean cargo pants. One pocket is the exact HxWxD of the Edge, another pocket is the exact fit for my cell phone.

When I first saw the commercial for these, I thought they were made for me. Then finally a Hechts near me got some in... and had them on sale for $39.00. I was ready to buy a pair in every color.

So I checked them out, and was quite dissapointed in the hidden zipper openinings. The ones they had had the two lower hidden pockets, and the one hidden inside the upper right pocket. All three were really small! Maybe I just have larger hands, but it was awkward for me trying to unzip them to either put something in or pull something out. Plus the lower pockets were just too tight with my edge in them... normally when you put your hands in your pocket to pull something out, you've got room in the pocket for your hand & what you're pulling out.

With these hidden zipper pockets (all three) I found it difficult. So I just didn't see them worthy enough to buy.

Maybe this will cause other pants makers to follow suit and put out their own model.

I agree, Casual pants look funny without the pleats. I guess I'm stuck with the one pocket. Looks like i won't be buying any more of these pants.

I too was not happy with the size of the lower pockets. My Visor would not fit, but my phone would...I wish they were deeper!

Does anyone know anything about the Scott eVest ( http://www.scottevest.com/ ) . How about a review of this?
