Question Got a new Visor Prism - how to changeover from Visor Deluxe

I've had a blue Visor Deluxe since the early days, and I've loved it. But yearning for color, I just bought a (refurbished) Visor Prism. Is there an easy way to switch everything over from the VDX to the Prism? Should I name the Prism the same thing as the VDX and just sync? That seems too easy. Do I have to reload programs (such as FreeCell), or can I beam them to the new Prism? Any help would be appreciated!

This will be the easiest way to transfer programs and files seamlessly:

USE A BACKUP SPRINGBOARD MODULE

This will transfer everything from the Deluxe to the Prism...including your HotSync User Name. The best part is how quick and easy it is (gotta love those springboards!)

Of course...this is another $30 investment if you don't have the module already. If you don't have one though, try HotSyncing the Prism with the same user name. Be sure to change the conduit setting to "desktop overwrites handheld" or you will lose EVERYTHING!. A backup copy of your "Palm" Folder on the computer won't hurt either.

That'll work!

Thanks! I do have a backup module. Don't know why that didn't occur to me -- it's obviously the way to go! I'll post my results!

I knew I could count on VisorCentral -- all of you out there have never failed me yet! Thanks!

Well, it almost works . . . .

Well, after a few hiccups and burps (like some programs that I'd had on the VDX crashed the Prism -- I deleted them from the VDX and tried again. Now everything works except the Home icon. If I use the buttons across the bottom, I can access Datebook, Calendar, etc. And the calculator icon works the calculator, and the Find icon does a search. Neither the Home nor the Menu icons work. The Menu icon doesn't do anything at all, and the Home icon creates a "Fatal Error," causing me to reset. And I'm back to where I started. Any thoughts?

If you have any hacks installed on the VDx, be sure to disable them before you backup. Also, if you are using a third party launcher, disable it so that the VDx uses the built in launcher. Those are my thoughts...

I upgrade from a VDx to a Pro using a 8meg backup module and had no problem at all.

Deleted a bunch of stuff - still not working

I've deleted all my hacks and HackMaster. Also an extraneous programs. I'm down to the things I really don't want to lose. I've backed up to the backup module, and restored into the Prism. Still no joy.

I notice in my list of things on the VDX something called HsExt 1.0.3M. The VDX will not let me delete it. Could this be the problem?

Help . . . .

This might be the problem. HSext sounds a lot like Hand Spring Extensions. This is probably some kind of patch for the OS 3.1 on the VDX. You can probably use a program like "filez" to remove the read only attribute and delete it.

I have had success by just reinstalling the Desktop software that came with the Prism and Hotsyncing the new visor. The software asks which username you want to sync with and then it reloads all of your software onto the new unit.

I just did this the other day for a client that had a Sony Clie 760. His screen broke so I had to send it in for service. I loaned him a Visor Edge for a few days. We just hooked up the Edge to his system, hit Hotsync, and all of his data flew right over! I then had to go in and remove a few sony-only files of the Edge, but it was really no problem.

By the way, my client really likes the edge - He said it was much simpler and "to the point" than the Sony. Maybe he will buy it as a backup....

This is what I did when I moved from the deluxe to prism.

Made a backup of deluxe with the backup module.
Disabled hacks, turned off launcher (maybe even deleted it after turning it off), deleted all the patches from Handspring from the deluxe.
Hotsynced the deluxe.
Hotsynced the prism, choosing the old deluxes name.
After a couple of days when all was working well, used the backup module to backup prism.
Gave sister the deluxe, which over a year later she broke the screen (the horror).

BTW, move to x-master it support color and it is free.

Everything working fine now

I finally got everything to work, and of course, the problem turned out to be pilot error! I deleted all that extraneous stuff mentioned before, but I forgot that before I restored to the Prism from the Backup Module, I had to hard reset the Prism. Once I did that, the restore worked fine and everything's great!

I'm glad everything worked out! Now you can enjoy your Prism and all the color, while I am stuck to my Deluxe ...did you want to buy me a Prism since I gave you the original idea?!

Good practice not to upgrade with Backup module

Backup modules are a cool way to transfer between the same model. Whwn upgrading you are much better off clearing out the Backup folder of your old user folder and then reinstalling everything that you know you need manually after your first HotSync with the new Visor. There are loads of things which can conflict with the newer Visor such as IrLink and extensions and updaters.

The only limit to this method is where some of your serialised software is storing its coding in the Saved Preferences file - sometimes it is a good idea to reinstall this one.
