Question

Has anyone Hotsynced a Visor and an iPaq using the same USB port?

I have just received and iPaq to test, but I am fearful of setting it up on the same system with which I Hotsync my Prism. Why you ask. Well I have a Jornada that I tried syncing using the USB port, the same one I used with the Prism, and I ran into trouble. Ultimately, I had to hotsync the Jornada through the serial port.

Thanks.

I use the same USB port to Hotsync both my VDX and my iPaq.
It has worked without a problem for me ever since I've started using the iPaq also. I just unplug the Visor USB and plug in the iPaq USB and it has worked without a hitch.

Cool

It should never be a problem because every USB device has a unique ID composed of a manufacturer code and a device code. It doesn't matter what port you use (unlike legacy ports like parallel and serial). This is why you can use a USB hub to increase the number of ports that you have on your computer. All you are doing is adding more plugs. The system is still dealing with it as a single port that has multiple devices plugged into it.

When the OS detects a new device has been plugged in, it checks the ID and looks in the Registry (on Windows) to see if it has a driver that is already associated. If it does, it just works. If it doesn't, you get the dreaded "Found New Hardware" dialog.

Some older drivers got confused when you moved a device from one port to another. The system would think that it was a new device and ask for drivers. By now most manufacturers have gotten their acts together.

Radar and Brad,

Thanks for the encouraging news. I'll give it a try. However, I must say again, I was unable to get a Jornada to sync through the same port with my Visor. After many calls to HP tech support, we opted to use the serial port with the Jornada and the USB with the Visor.
