How do I change the system and alarm sounds. I can change the volume but not the sound. The manual says tap the sound pick list (in the general preferences?) but there is no check list. I have loaded several new sounds.

I assume you're using Datebook+ that comes with the Visor. What you'll need to do is to goto the Menu for Datebook+ and choose Options then choose Alarm Preferences. Here you'll be able to choose what sounds you want.
