Question Is Memplug SM worth the upgrade?

I currently own both the 8 Mb flash module and backup module. The backup module is indispensible as it has saved my bacon several times, especially on the road. The flash module is great for storing big or infrequently used programs such as Noah Lite and games. After seeing the Memplug with its associated software, I realized I could replace two modules with one. Furthermore, I could probably profit by selling my flash and backup modules on Ebay, since I already own SM cards for my digital camera. But, some of the posts I have been reading suggest that the Memplug may not function as well as the flash module for running programs. As a matter of fact, since I own a VDX, I've read that I can't run PiDirect, so I can only store programs on the Memplug, but will actually have to transfer them over to my VDX to run them (as opposed to running them directly from the flash module). Is this indeed true? If so, it seems to be a major drawback and I may be better off keeping what I have. I'm open to any opinions or comments. Thanks in advance.
