Me to. I would have suspected another company before Palm. But this is definitely good news for Palm. It means we may now see a really diverse product line that extends beyond PDAs. I wonder if we'll see the BeOS kernel, which is UNIX based, as the plumbing for OS 5?

Cool.

Cool

Let's see if this has an effect on Palm's stock. I just visited CNET's stock listings. Palm still hovering around $4.00. Bet it goes up soon. Hopefully.

Lord, I hope so. Imagine choosing between two Arm devices, one with an OS based on WinCE or one with an OS based on BeOS. It's no choice at all.

Palm may conquer and destroy all in its path yet...

Amen. Microsoft named thier OS well.."Wince". I just hope when Palm moves towards a multitasking, multithreading, multimedia OS, they don't travel down the same path as Microsoft by using such a lame memory architecture like "Shared memory" or dynamic allocation. Yeah, I always loved fighting with my PocketPC over what program gets what chunk of memory, by using the stupid slider.

Ah, what a coup that would be. I must say though, it's about friggin time Palm got off its lazy ass a did something.

As a licensee they can look forward to a potentially kick ass OS that will offer a quantem leap in power, performance, and functionality that could mop the floor with WinCE.

By the way, does anyone else see the irony that Microsoft's CE now competes with Palm's BE? =)

Foo I gather that you have Palm stock? It doesn't appear that Palm investors are digeting the news well. Handspring's stock is worth more than Palm's stock now.

Arrow BeOs flavored

With a BeOS flavored Palm OS, there is no need for Handspring to flirt with WinCE. Next year will be the most exciting year for PDAs IMO. I can't wait!

I agree. The digesting of Be means that Palm can tap into an incredibly robust OS. One that is a far more elegant solution than CE. The only downside to this is that we most likely won't see this new supercharged PalmOS until next year at the earliest.

Now Handspring needs to absorb Palm's hardware division. Innovation will happen in bounds and MS will get thrashed. I don't think we've seen Microsoft get ugly in the pda arena yet. This is looking to be a good time.

BeOS is NOT UNIX-based! It is POSIX-compliant, but that is it. It was completely written from scratch. It does use the BASH shell, however.

Palm buys the technology behind the greates OS the world has ever seen for a paltry $11 million. Damn I wish I had a rich uncle!

I wonder how this is going to affect us BeOS users. Hopefully we will see BONE, OpenGL, Opera 5 and the other things we've been waiting so long for. This is very good for Palm, though. BeIA kicks the snot out of WinCE on internet applinaces, and with Palm's move to ARM-based procesors, a Be-flavored PalmOS 5 should totally put WinCE to shame!

I've only been reading about BeOS for a few minutes, but I'm impressed! I may have to take back some of my pointed comments about Carl. I wonder what the relation is between this and Palm Inc's head of OS resigning (effective tomorrow).

Well, an idea to buy a new (color) Handspring non-OS-upgradable
device instead of my VDX seems now a bit less appealing...

I was wondering when you would chime in.

As a posted said on /. , I guess this means future Palm devices will have a little LED meter on the side, indicating Processor usage.

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't know Be was a POSIX derivative. Guess that means it has more in common with Linux than UNIX. Or is MINUX? I'm not that familiar with BeOS other than the few times I used 5.0, which I have to say is by far the most elegant easy to use *NIX style OS I have ever seen. Be is the first OS that I immediately understood the moment I grabbed the mouse. Not only did I find it brain dead simple, but, much I actually prefered it to Windows! Unfortunatly without apps it wasn't of much use to me.

Ha! Bet Gassee really regrets turning down that 125 million offer from Apple now. 11 mil is chump change compared to that.

The real question is, will Palm build any of this into the next OS?

Does this means we will be able to bring up the Bash Shell on our Palm's? =)
