Hello Everyone ----

OK, who has procured and tested what they think is the best map database that works on the Companion???? I want to get some real good detailed maps, so what can the experienced experts here recommend????

Hey Bob!

I have the Magellan, and have been tinkering around with the Map Companion software - so far so good.

I'm intrigued about Handmap:

Its the most fully featured map program I've seen so far (at least in description), but the price is scaring me: $30 bucks for the GPS enabled version PLUS you have to pay for each map your download. You can get unlimited maps for $72 smackers.

- The route tracking looks really cool. The interface for defining the road looks neat. And when you are on the route, the section of road you're on flashes & there is a display that tells you what road you're on & what your next turn should be.

- You can create points on your map & enter info about them (memory permitting) AND you can link these points to your address book! Cool!

Like I said I'm skiddish about the price though....I may just stick with the Map Companion from Marcosoft because my road navigation is not THAT important to me.
I got my GPS for backpacking!

I have problems with the HandMap software and they are reluctant to refund your money unless you can prove it just plain doesn't work - depends on how you define "doesn't work" - they seem to define it differently than I do.

The result in my case is that I paid the $72 dollars and now never use their software.

My only real complaint with the software that came with the Magellan is that there are two separate pieces of software and I find myself always wishing that the features of both were in the same package and I didn't have to switch back and forth.

The mapopolis software is WAY cool. Really good for finding where you are and what's around you and how to find things you don't know where are located.

Mapopolis is a little bit slower in screen redraw than MapCompanion - kinda like the GeoView software - but it shows a lot of information and has a lot more to it.

QuoVadis from Marcosoft is OK..

I have been using QuoVadis from Marcosoft with a Visor and Etrex - quite happy with it.
Two problems:
1) No Canadian maps
2) Map installation is a hairy affair - you need to know which county you are going through or else you need to install the entire state map. But now with things like Memplug etc it is possible to carry several state maps all the time I guess.
