Edge, what else?

i have read many reviews and have noticed that people turn down what may be the best PDA because of the smallest detail
the edge is a good example. people dont like it because of the springboard that you have to put on manually. that takes all of 5 to ten seconds. the edge was designed for people who liked handspring visors, but didnt need the springboard all the time.
it has many features that are IMO better then most other PDA's on the market still: metal flip cover, metal outter stylus, LED, improved backlight, oppitional springboard
the only thing i dont like about it is the location of the IR port.
also, it isnt just the Edge that is being discontinued, the whole visor line is to make way for the treo line

I like this guys opinion. I think the edge is a neat thing. I am still hearing opposing things about wether or not the visor line is being discontinued...

Then you obviously don't know why I don't like it. It has the worst QC of any pda (hell, any consumer electronics device) I've ever purchased, starting with the PalmPilot Pro. It also revealed HS's tendency to obfuscate the truth (they announced 'edge specific' expansion options like memory and modem at announcement). I went through 6+ of them in as many months before selling it on ebay at a serious loss.

You may want to take some time, do a search for my posts in the edge forum, and get back to me.

I wasnt trying to start a commotion, i was just saying that i think it is stupid that for the people who turn it down due to the springboard attachment.
its all your opinion, but this is my second PDA, an upgrade from a palm m100,which totally sucked, so to me, it is great and meets all my needs
i have to say im sorry that you had such a bad experience with yours, i just hope you see where i was coming from

You aren't first person to love the Edge. I have read posts from edge owners that just think its the best thing since slice bread.

Happy Treo 600 user, so far. Thanx Cingular for having an unlocked phone.

My Treo 600 is my phone, my PDA, my watch, and my MP3 player. Oh yeah, I take a picture once in a while with it. Convergence is such a great thing.

Why is it stupid? The sled destroys the form factor, eliminates screen protection, and is a kludge. Without the expansion options the sled offers, the Edge doesn't really have much in its favor, so issues with the sled are pretty make or break with the Edge (sales would seem to support the break theory).

Wonderful, but it doesn't mean that those that don't like the Edge or offer constructive criticism about its shortfalls are stupid.

I think the first part is all up to personal opinion. I rarely ever use my sled, and when I do the fact that it's bigger doesn't bother me. If you really want a pda that keeps the expansion thing in 100% of the time, buy a pro, or something like that.

Plus, I may be wrong, but I don't believe that he was calling anyone stupid, he was saying that some of these reasons are stupid.

No. Whether or not it's an issue for a particular individual is a personal opinion. The things I stated are facts. The Edge has built-in screen protection and a slim form. Putting the sled on eliminates both of those and makes it slightly thicker than a Visor Deluxe.

That's fine. My point is that if someone else considers it a problem, that does not make their concerns 'stupid'.

I don't believe I ever stated that I did. If I did, I wouldn't have pruchased the Edge in the first place. However, after having done so, I found that I used springboards much less than I did with previous Visors due to the specifics previously stated. I've come to the point now where I only use the backup module and sold nearly all my other springboards with my Deluxe, and gave the other two to my wife. Effectively, Handspring's experiment with the Edge showed me that there were no springboards compelling enough for me to want to use the sled much at all, hence showing that Handspring obviously isn't the company who will sell me my next PDA.

Functionally, he was saying that their concerns were stupid, which isn't that far separated.

i was just saying that in my OPINION i dont think that it is right for people to turn it down because of the springboard sled
if you want a slim visor, but want a springboard as well, then you have the edge
if you dont want bulk, then you are S.O.L.
so deal with it

That's fine, when you phrase it that way. I'm just trying to get across the point that when you say that people who disagree with your opinion are stupid (or say their reasons are stupid), then you're not really going to exactly be able to have a rational discussion. OTOH, if you're just looking for cheerleading and to feel good about your decision, carry on and forget I said anything.

Except that the Edge doesn't give you a slim visor _and_ a springboard. It's an either/or proposition. You can have a slim visor or a springboard. When you add the springboard, you lose your slim visor (and its screen protection).

I've been dealing with one for quite a while now. I'm at least as qualified as you are to speak about the Edge, shortcomings and all. The Edge, as a Visor, is flawed. It's not irreparably broken (although Handspring couldn't care less about 'fixing' it). It just has real issues in carrying out what it was supposed to do. Deal with it.

Well, yeah. The reason some people get the edge is because it's small, at least I did. The only module I've ever had is a 8MB backup that I only use form when I going away from my pc for a long time. For that short of time I don't mind the thickness, and you can always get one of those screen protector, too.

That's the only module I use these days as well. Shame that I have a GPS for it that sits up on a shelf in my office, though.

I guess I never thought of that. I only use my backing-up device for about ten minutes at most, and then the cover goes back on. I never thought about using the sled for extended periods of time...

That's my point, though. If the springboard isn't usable with it other than in a backup situation, then the springboard isn't of much use with it and could have been just as easily replaced with another thinner technology.
