Hi,

This is my first post to this board, so my apologies if this message is out of place. I have just ordered a 2MB Visor for a Christmas gift, but I'm seeing a lot of comments that the 8MB Deluxe is definitely worth getting over the 2MB one. The hardware specs look the same otherwise, it appears to be cheaper to get the 2MB Visor with an $80 8MB flash card than the 8MB Deluxe. Retail price on the Visor is $150 + $80 card = $230, whereas the Deluxe is $250, and 10MB vs. 8MB. Is there any real advantage to getting the Deluxe?

It is true that you can get the visor and the mem sb for a lower cost.

Unfortunately, that 10 mb can be used like the 8mb in the deluxe.

Basically the 8mb sb is a storage device. You can run some program on the module, but not all. And most data for said progams will still have to be on the visor not the SB.

If you can afford the Deluxe, i would go for it. And if you can afford an extra $50 (above the deluxe), go for the platinum. Which has a faster processor and an updated OS.

If you bought the visor from a place that you can return it "no questions asked," play with carry it around for a week. If it suits your need keep it.

One thing you should test during this test run is avantgo.com. This app alone will make you need the 8mb version.

BTW, welcome to the Visor family.

Exclamation for 150, no cradle

The only reason you're getting a discount is they aren't sending you a cradle for that $150. The price for the Visor 2M with the cradle is $179. In other words, you can't backup your data to your desktop.

Felipe -
What types of programs can't be run off the module? Also, how much data do typical tasks consume?

The person who will be using the Visor (my sister) will be using it mainly as an organizer, and maybe buying a modem in the future. I can see that she would have to swap the modem and module between uses, but this is OK. Thanks for your help, BTW.

I wasn't aware there were models without the hotsync cradle. I'm pretty sure Amazon.com and Staples have dropped the price to $150 instead of offering one without the cradle (the product description said the cradle was included). But I'll look out for it, thanks for the heads up.

Amazon is currently offering the same deal as Handspring... $149.00 for the 2mb Visor with the standard USB cradle.

As for the 2mb vs. 8mb question, if (and it's a big if) all you need is the PIM functionality, then 2mb should be fine. The problem comes when you realize just how powerful the little device is and want more and more apps... that 2mb can fill up fast! Sure, the 8mb Flash module will help, but anything on it will not be available if and when you swap it out for a modem (or any other module). Of course, CardAccess has announced the Thinmodem+ (8mb of flash storage) so that module would do what you're looking for. Personally, I believe the 8mb VDx (or Platinum) is a better starting point. If you go with the 2mb to begin with and then realize it's not enough, the upgrade will be $249 (less whatever can be recovered by selling the std Visor).

my mistake

I just read that a little while ago in the Handspring junk e-mail I received. It's about time they lowered some prices. It's a pittance, though. They should have never offered a Visor without a cradle in the first place. It can't cost them that much to make.

If you do get the 2 Meg and want to upgrade it later STNEcorp.com will put in a 8Meg chip in place of the 2 Meg for $90.
