Guess I'll actually get into this fray now.

Aside from a porn module redefining "handheld computing" where would you expect this to be sold? Staples, OfficeMax, CompUSA, Target certainly won't carry it, there would be too much backlash (or chance of it).
I suppose if it were tied with a specific magazine, it would be sold via whatever on-line store they have.
Making a springboard is apparently expensive -- I can't think of one for less than $40, regardless of functionality. Any magazine that wants to get its content onto handheld screens would likely find a way a make a cheaper PalmOS based program and .pdb, for maximum exposure (that is, after all, why print still exists -- the initial hardware investment is much smaller). It might even be more cost-effective to create a CD-ROM of material.
Personally, I have no interest in such a thing, but hey, whatever smotes your bloat.
